Football Mocs Travel To Presbyterian College

  • Monday, September 14, 2009

The Chattanooga Mocs hit the road for the first time in 2009 when they travel to Clinton, S.C., for a non-conference match-up against Presbyterian College. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

Fans in the Chattanooga area can catch the game on the Mocs Radio Network on ESPN Radio 105.1 FM. Jim Reynolds, who is in his 30th year as the play-by-play voice of the Mocs, will have the call along with color commentator Todd Agne and sideline reporter Will Poindexter.

The Mocs Radio Network’s broadcast and a live pay-per-view video stream of the game are both available on GoMocs.com.

The Mocs and Blue Hose have hooked up for five contests over the years. However, this series has not seen any action since the 1962 season when UTC last visited Clinton, S.C., and came away with a 31-20 win. The other four games were all played in Chattanooga. The Mocs have a 3-2 overall advantage in the rivalry.

UTC is currently 1-1 on the season after dropping a 20-38 game against Furman last weekend. PC is 0-2 with losses to SoCon foes Furman (21-45) and No. 10 Elon (7-41). The Blue Hose, a member of the Big South Conference, open the season with four straight games against SoCon opponents. They travel to The Citadel on Sept. 26 before opening conference play.

Presbyterian College is in its third year of Division I competition and is led by first-year head coach Harold Nichols.

NOTES TO KNOW BEFORE THE GAME
• The Mocs snapped a 10-game losing streak with their win over Glenville State on Sept. 3. Chattanooga is looking to snap a 17-game losing streak against Division I opponents. The Mocs’ last FCS win was 39-21 against Western Carolina on Oct. 13, 2007 in Chattanooga.

• Chattanooga has lost nine straight road games overall. UTC’s last road win was 45-38 at Georgia Southern on Sept. 22, 2007.

• UTC is trying to win its first non-conference game against a Division I opponent since a 31-7 victory at Tennessee Tech, on Aug. 31, 2006.

• Both PC and UTC are led by first year head coaches who have returned to their alma maters. Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman was a defensive back for the Mocs from 1978-81 and is a 1983 graduate. Harold Nichols is a 1989 graduate of PC.

• Sophomore QB B.J. Coleman created quite a stir in the Scenic City when he announced his decision to transfer from Tennessee to Chattanooga. The former high school standout at McCallie in Chattanooga won the Mocs’ starting job over senior Jare Gault. He is trying to become the first Moc to throw for 200+ yards in three consecutive games since 2004. He is currently second in the SoCon with 241.5 passing yards per game.

• Senior WR Blue Cooper has caught 21 of sophomore QB B.J. Coleman’s 40 pass completions. Cooper has also accounted for 236 of Coleman’s 483 passing yards. He currently leads the SoCon with 21 receptions and is second with 118 receiving yards per game.

• Senior Blue Cooper is trying to become the first Moc since 2003 to record 100-yards receiving in three consecutive games. He had 127 yards against Glenville State and 109 against Furman.

• Senior linebacker Joseph Thornton has started in 29 consecutive games heading into the Furman contest. He had a career-high 17 tackles against Glenville State. He leads the SoCon with 24 tackles and is tied for team-high with a pair of pass break-ups.

• Senior Craig Camay has made 25 consecutive PATs. He is 6-6 this season and is 39-41 for his career. He is also very accurate on FGs inside the 40. He is 8-9 over the last two seasons on FGs less than 40 yards. He missed a 45-yarder against Glenville State last weekend but hit from 35 and 42 yards against Furman.

• True freshman Chris Awuah has been impressive in his first two college games. He scored on his first career touch, beating three defenders on a broken play for the three-yard TD run against Glenville State. He currently leads the team in scoring with three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, while his 103 rushing yards are also tops on the team.

• Senior DE Josh Beard has set career-highs in tackles in each of the first two games (five vs. Glenville State and six vs. Furman).

• Junior defensive back Buster Skrine is the Mocs’ lone representative on the preseason All-Southern Conference team. He was named to the second squad. He returned a blocked PAT for two points against Glenville State last week. He has an INT, four tackles and two PBUs on the season.

• Senior RB Bryan Fitzgerald saw his first action since 2007 against Furman. He ran for 69 yards on a career-high 23 carries. Fitzgerald was a 2008 preseason All-SoCon back but missed all of last year, spring practice and the season opener due to injuries.

CAMAY, AWUAH NAMED SOCON PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
http://www.gomocs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=88679&SPID=10577&DB_OEM_ID=17700&ATCLID=204793770
Senior PK Craig Camay and freshman RB Chris Awuah were both honored by the Southern Conference for their performances against Furman last week. Camay connected on both of his FG attempts (35, 42) and was 2-2 on PATs against the Paladins. It is the second career honor for Camay who also won the weekly award on Sept. 24, 2007, during his sophomore season. Awuah racked up 93 total yards and a TD for the Mocs. He had eight carries for 34 yards and three catches for 59 yards. He hauled in a 52-yard TD pass from sophomore QB B.J. Coleman in the first quarter for his third TD of the season. Awuah currently leads the Mocs in scoring with 18 points. These are the first players of the week honors for a Moc since Chris Camacho was named defensive player of the week on Oct. 15, 2007.

COLEMAN GOING FOR THREE-STRAIGHT 200+ PASSING GAMES
Sophomore QB B.J. Coleman is trying to become the first Moc to throw for 200+ yards in three straight games since Cedric Stevens accomplished the feat in 2004. Stevens had 200+ yard passing games in each of the Mocs final seven games in 2004. Coleman was 18-34 for 258 yards with a TD in the season opener against Glenville State. He threw for 225 yards on 22-31 passing with two TDs and an INT against Furman. He now has 483 yards on 40-65 passing on the season.

COOPER WITH BACK-TO-BACK 100-YARD RECEIVING GAMES
Senior Blue Cooper has amassed 100 yards in each of the Mocs’ first two games. It is the first time at UTC player has gained 100 yards receiving in consecutive games since Emmanuel Hassel accomplished the feat in the last two games of the 2004 season...vs. Liberty (11-130) and Furman (11-108). He is trying to become the first Moc to get three-straight 100-yard games since Alonzo Nix did it against Gardner-Webb (168), Georgia Southern (112) and Wofford (135) in 2003.

COLEMAN-COOPER CONNECTION
Senior WR Blue Cooper and sophomore QB B.J. Coleman have been quite the connection in two games this season. Cooper has caught 21 of Coleman’s 40 pass completions and has accounted for 236 of Coleman’s 483 passing yards. Here is a breakdown of their connection on the field:
- 11 first downs
- 10 completions for 10+ yards
- 6 completions on the first play of a drive
- three third-down conversions
- Coleman has only thrown four incompletions in 25 attempts to get the ball to Cooper

COOPER CLOSING IN ON THE TOP-10 IN RECEIVING YARDS
Senior receiver Blue Cooper currently leads the Mocs with 236 yards on 21 catches. He has 1,202 career receiving yards and needs 462 yards to pass Emmanuel Hassell (2004-06) to get into the top-10 in the UTC record book.

OFFENSIVE LINE IMPROVING
The Mocs’ offensive line is one of the most improved areas on the team, thanks in large part to the emergence of junior Chris Harr. Harr earned the team’s Bob Davis Winter Warrior Award for his work in the weight room and conditioning during the offseason. The o-line has only allowed one sack in two games so far this season.

WOODS RECEPTIVE
Senior wideout Clint Woods led the Mocs with 512 yards on 49 catches in 2008. He also caught three touchdown passes averaging 10.4 yards per catch. With 102 career receptions, Woods needs 17 more to move into the Mocs’ top-8 all time. He also has an outside chance of breaking into UTC’s top-10 for receiving yards, sitting 612 yards out of the top-10.

MOCS SET RECORD FOR SEASON TICKET SALES
The Chattanooga Mocs broke the all-time season ticket mark at Finley Stadium with 2,527 sold in 2009. The previous school record of 2,300 season tickets sold was set in the 1997 season, the first year of Finley Stadium. This is the third year UTC has topped the 2000-sold mark, including 2,003 sold in 1998. Chattanooga nearly doubled its sales from 2008 when 1,271 were sold. .

TWO TOP-5 CROWDS AT FINLEY STADIUM IN 2009

Sophomore Chris Lewis-Harris recorded three interceptions last year, tying for the second most in school history by a freshman. The most interceptions by a freshman is four made by head coach Russ Huesman in 1978.

THREE RETURNERS PLANNING TO REDSHIRT
Three returning players are already planning to redshirt the 2009 season. Sophomore offensive lineman Nick Gipson is coming off an knee injury he suffered prior to the start of spring practice that kept him out of all of the workouts last semester. He is planning to use the fall as a chance to continue to recover from the injury. Gipson saw action in four games with one start as a true freshman in 2008

Senior RB Erroll Wynn led Chattanooga’s ground attack with 636 yards and three touchdowns on 196 carriers last season. Despite being slowed by a wrist injury for the early part of the 2008 season, Wynn is making a move into the rushing record books at UTC. His 460 career rushing attempts is currently ranked No. 8 all time at Chattanooga. He needs 152 attempts to break the all-time record held by James Roberts (1990-93). He has 1,804 career rushing yards and needs 85 more to break into the Mocs’ top-10. He has a chance to break into the top-5 in Chattanooga’s record books. Wynn was held out of spring practice due to an off season injury and is also planning to redshirt the 2009 regular season.

Senior receiver Chris Marshall came off the bench in seven games last year, but is planning to redshirt the 2009 campaign.

CAPTAINS CHOSEN FOR 2009
Following the Spring Game, Coach Huesman announced the captains for the 2009 season as voted on by the players. Seniors Clint Woods, B.J. Taylor, Jare Gault and Steven Smigelsky were all selected by their teammates. MAJORITY OF THE MOCS ARE FROM TENNESSEE AND GEORGIA
Of the 89 members currently on the Mocs’ roster, 75 list Tennessee (41) or Georgia (33) as their home state. That means 84% of the roster is from Tennessee or Georgia, including 46% from Tennessee and 38% from Georgia. Four Mocs are from Alabama, three hail from California and two from Mississippi. There is one representative each from Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia.

Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before the award recipients were determined.

ASSISTANT COACHES WITH CHATTANOOGA TIES
Chattanooga head coach Russ Huesman has put together an impressive group of assistant coaches for the 2009 season. Not only are the assistants very experienced college football coaches, but many of them posses ties to UTC and Chattanooga. A UTC letterman himself, Huesman brought in former Moc teammate Russ Ehrenfeld (1977-80) to guide the offensive line. Tony Coode, the tight-ends coach, also played at UTC from 1998-00. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was a graduate assistant at UTC from 1999-00 and the receivers coach in 2001. Defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator Carter Cardwell has had two previous stints at UTC. He was the tight-ends coach in 1989 and coached the offensive line, tight-ends and running backs from 1997-02. He was the long-snapper on three Southern Conference championship squads during his career at UTC. He was also a teammate of current head coach Russ Huesman and assistant coach Russ Ehrenfeld. Murphy and Ehrenfeld were roommates for three years during their time with the Mocs. Haugerud and Murphy’s gift totals $2 million for the University. In addition to the $500,000 given to the Mocs’ football program, the couple also donated $1.5 million to UTC’s College of Business. The donation to the business school is for the development of the Renee Haugerud and John H. Murphy Global Finance Center. This center will serve the more than 1,900 students from all business majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

BRENDA LAWSON STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS CENTER
The Brenda Lawson Student-Athlete Success Center opened in December 2008 and is a valuable asset for the UTC football program. The $3.2 million facility includes the Wolford Strength and Conditioning Center, which is considered one of the best strength and conditioning facilities in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Wolford Center includes nearly every type of weight training equipment necessary to help UTC student-athletes perform at the highest level. Unique to the facility is a 43-yard, 3-lane indoor track. The track allows for agility and speed training and serves as a proper warm-up area inside the weight room. The facility also contains a variety of cardio and rehab equipment for the exclusive use of UTC student-athletes. The entire facility overlooks Vine Street and is conveniently located in the middle of campus. The Wolford Family Strength & Conditioning Center was completed thanks to the help of former Moc football student-athlete Bucky Wolford (1966-69).

There are three former Mocs who are likely to be on an NFL roster in the Fall. Terrell Owens (1992-96) recently signed with the Buffalo Bills while Terdell Sands (1999) is currently with the Oakland Raiders. Eldra Buckley (2005-06) was recently released from the San Diego Chargers, but has signed on with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2009 season.

UTC HOSTS DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
UTC and the City of Chattanooga will host the 2009 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game. The game will be played at Finley Stadium for the 13th straight year. UTC ENROLLMENT PASSES 10,000 FOR THE FIRST TIME
UTC enrollment reached a major milestone this fall with 10,526 students—more than a 7 percent increase over last fall. This growth continues a five-year trend of record enrollment for the campus. Freshman enrollment—at 2,209—reached a record number, as did Graduate School enrollment. Once again, UTC was ranked in the top tier of the Top Public Master’s Universities in the South in the U.S. News & World Report 2010 America’s Best Colleges, placing it in the top tier of Southern universities.
