CREWS SAY THEY ARE MAKING PROGRESS TONIGHT CLEANING UP A TRAIN DERAILMENT IN RURAL POLK COUNTY. IT HAPPENED AROUND 5:30 THIS MORNING WHEN A BRIDGE COLLAPSED AT NORTHEAST 102ND AVENUE EAST OF ANKENY. SEVERAL RAIL CARS JUMPED THE TRACKS. THESE AERIAL PHOTOS FROM KCCI VIEWER DICK BASCOM SHOW THE SIZE OF THE DERAILMENT. THERE ARE NO REPORTS OF ANY SERIOUS INJURIES. BUT THE DERAILMENT SHUTDOWN SEVERAL RURAL ROADS EAST OF ANKENY. THE IOWA DEPATMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD AND FIRE CREWS FROM ANKENY, DES MOINES, AND ELKHART WERE ON THE SCENE ALL DAY. >> WE ARE WORKING TO GET THE ROADWAYS OPEN AGAIN. Some rural roads reopened Friday night after a massive train derailment. Crews are still cleaning up the scene east of Ankeny and south of Elkhart. Investigators said the cars jumped the tracks at about 5:30 a.m. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said a small bridge north of Northeast 102nd Avenue collapsed and caused multiple train cars to topple off the tracks. The Des Moines Fire Department Haz-Mat team was also called in to help handle any hazardous materials. The cause of the derailment is now under investigation.
