Search resumes on Smith Lake for missing boater whose vessel capsized

Authorities on Monday resumed a search of Smith Lake for a missing Fultondale man whose boat capsized Thursday.

Sonar, cadaver dogs, aircraft and dive teams were deployed on the lake in hopes of finding 26-year-old Dustin New, who hasn’t been seen since his boat capsized on Smith Lake in Cullman County.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol Sgt. Chad Pate said extreme heat, water depth and conditions on the bottom of Smith Lake have made the search for New difficult. The search “will continue today for as long as possible,” Pate said.

Assisting ALEA Marine Patrol are the agency’s aviation division, Logan Fire & Rescue, Crane Hill Fire & Rescue, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, Houston County Search & Rescue, Christian Aid Ministries Search & Rescue and Elite Detection K-9.
