Police ID Woman Killed In Moriches Inlet Boat Crash

Her husband was rescued by passing boaters and treated for minor injuries, police say.

MORICHES, NY โ€” Police have identified the woman killed in a boat crash east of Moriches Inlet Sunday as Mi Hua Hsu, 56, of Arpage Drive East in Shirley.

Hsu and her husband, Jack Chin, were on a boat, drifting just east of the Moriches Inlet, when their vessel was struck by 50-foot Sea Ray, operated by Robert Burkhardt, 65, of East Moriches, Suffolk County Police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place at 6:28 p.m. Sunday when the 50' Sea Ray with three people aboard โ€” which was traveling westbound a quarter mile off Cupsogue Beach at Cupsogue Beach County Park โ€” struck a drifting boat broadside with the couple aboard. The man jumped from the boat, and the woman was thrown into the water, police said.

Hsu was pulled from the water by the Coast Guard and taken to the Coast Guard station where she was pronounced dead by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Her husband was rescued by passing boaters and was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Both boats were impounded for safety checks, police said.
