A BULAWAYO man yesterday donated gift baskets to women with new-born babies at the United Bulawayo Hospital’s Lady Rodwell Maternity Hospital in celebration of his 32nd birthday.

Mr Marx Mupungu donated the gift baskets to all babies that share the same birthday with him: August 8. The gift baskets comprised tissue paper, baby wipes, 100 grammes petroleum jelly, peanut butter, toothpaste, two kilogrammes of sugar and sanitary pads.

Mr Mupungu and his friend, Mr Blessed Mushando took the gifts to a ward at the Lady Rodwell Maternity Hospital at about 11AM with the help of the matron and nurses.

He said the donations were a way of remembering his birth place and giving back to the community.

“I am very happy to be celebrating my birthday this way and getting to touch the hearts of all the mothers that I am donating to. This is my first time to donate and I intend to do this every year,” said Mr Mupungu.

The women who received the gift baskets expressed their gratitude.

Mrs Sibonginkosi Ngwenya from Kensington suburb who delivered twins, a boy and a girl, said she had no words for such generosity.

“Not many people think of giving to mothers and their babies and we are therefore very grateful to Mr Mupungu for these donations,” said Mrs Ngwenya.

Another woman, Ms Sibusisiwe Munenge from Nketa suburb said that she was surprised that someone decided to celebrate his birthday with them.
