Man shoots at police on I-255, taken into custody after manhunt that closed road

At around 10:55, the man was taken into custody without incident. A gun was recovered from the scene.

CASEYVILLE, Ill. — Police closed both directions of Interstate 255 for hours after a man fired shots at police officers before running into the woods nearby Sunday morning.

The Illinois Department of Transportation closed Interstate 255 near Caseyville, Illinois, at around 7 a.m. for a police investigation.

A spokesman for the Illinois State Police said they spotted a man walking on the median of I-255 at around 6 a.m. The man matched the description of a homicide suspect, so they approached him. When they got close, the man pulled out a gun and started shooting at officers.

One of the officers shot back, and the man ran into the woods.

At around 10:55, the man was taken into custody without incident. A gun was recovered from the scene.

All lanes in the area have since reopened.
