Rollover crash kills Hugoton teen, injures another

One teen died and another was seriously injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash Sunday north of Rolla.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Edgar Rodriguez, 16, of Hugoton, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet New Tahoe east on Morton County Road Z when the “vehicle became unstable and ran off the roadway to the right.”

The vehicle entered the south ditch and rolled, ejecting Rodriguez before coming to rest on the passenger side.

Rodriguez was taken to Stanton County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A passenger in the SUV, Juan Fraire, 16, Hugoton, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with serious injuries, the patrol reported. An updated condition was not immediately available.

The crash occurred at 6:05 p.m. just west of the intersection with County Road 27, about 14 miles north of Rolla.

Fraire was wearing a seat belt, while Rodriguez was not, the patrol reported.
