NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WJW) — An entire neighborhood in North Ridgeville glowed a brilliant shade of blue Wednesday night to honor two fallen officers and all who serve.

“It started off, I asked a few people if they’d be interested in putting a few lights up, and then I had more interest than I thought and nobody could find lights so we just went out and found as many lights as we could,” said Bobby Elwell, an Army veteran who organized the tribute.

Elwell ended up driving about three hours and almost to the Indiana border to purchase 275 blue light bulbs.

He then distributed them to his neighbors in the Timber Ridge development.

The lights are meant to honor Cleveland Police Detective James Skernivitz, who was recently killed in the line of duty and his friend Officer Nicholas Sabo, who took his own life afterward.

Sabo’s widow and four children live in North Ridgeville.

“His services were today so I just felt like, do the best we could to show support,” said Elwell, “Just to show we support them, we just want to let them know, hey we’re here for you.”

Almost every neighbor participated and when a police cruiser drove by they stopped and applauded the officers.

“I mean as minimal as this may seem we’re just hoping they know we’re here and we’re thinking about them,” said neighbor Cassie Keller.

Several businesses also turned on blue lights, including the Auto-O-Rama Twin Drive-in where a thin blue line was displayed on their big screens.
