Voter guide 2020: Who's running in Central Massachusetts

Voters in Massachusetts will elect members of the state Senate and House of Representatives today.

Also on the ballot are races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and Worcester County register of probate.

The ballot was finalized with the state primary on Sept. 1.

Below is a rundown of candidates to be considered by Central Massachusetts voters.

Massachusetts State Senate races

Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire and Middlesex

Incumbent Anne M. Gobi, D-Spencer, faces Republican Steven R. Hall of Sturbridge.

Incumbent Dean A. Tran, R-Fitchburg, is being challenged by Democrat John J. Cronin of Lunenburg.

Worcester and Norfolk

Incumbent Ryan C. Fattman, R-Sutton, is being challenged by Democrat Christine Crean of Milford, who waged a successful write-in campaign during the primary

Massachusetts House of Representatives races

2nd Franklin

Incumbent Susannah M. Whipps of Athol, an independent, is seeking reelection. She faces William E. LaRose of Athol, a Democrat.

4th Middlesex

Incumbent Danielle W. Gregoire, D-Marlboro, is being challenged by Syed H. Hashmi of Westboro, an independent.

2nd Worcester

Incumbent Jonathan D. Zlotnik, D-Gardner, is being opposed by Bruce K. Chester, a Republican from Gardner.

3rd Worcester

Incumbent Stephan Hay of Fitchburg is not seeking reelection. Michael P. Kushmerek, a Democrat, and Glenn C. Fossa, a Republican, both of Fitchburg, are seeking to fill the seat.

4th Worcester

Incumbent Natalie Higgins, D-Leominster, is being challenged by Thomas F. Ardinger, a Republican from Leominster.

5th Worcester

Incumbent Donald R. Berthiaume Jr., R-Spencer, is being opposed by Samuel Biagetti, a Democrat from North Brookfield.

7th Worcester

Incumbent Paul K. Frost, R-Auburn, is running against Terry Burke Dotson, an independent from Millbury.

12th Worcester

Incumbent Harold P. Naughton Jr. is not running for reelection. The contest is between Democrat Meghan Kilcoyne of Northboro, Republican Susan E. Smiley of Lancaster and Charlene R. DeCalogero of Berlin, a Green-Rainbow candidate.

Register of Probate, Worcester County

Incumbent Stephanie K. Fattman, R-Sutton, is being challenged by Democrat John B. Dolan III of Worcester.

U.S. House of Representatives races

1st District

Incumbent Richard Neal, D-Springfield, won a primary challenge from Alex Morse, the mayor of Holyoke. A Republican candidate withdrew from the race.

2nd District

Incumbent James P. McGovern, D-Worcester, was unopposed in the Democratic primary. He will face Tracy Lovvorn, a Republican from Grafton, in the general election.

5th District

Incumbent Katherine Clark, D-Melrose, will face Republican Caroline Colarusso of Stoneham on Nov. 3.

U.S. Senate race

Incumbent Edward M. Markey defeated U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III in the Democratic primary. Republican Kevin O'Connor defeated Shiva Ayyadurai in the primary. Andre Gray of the Green Party and Frederick Mayock, an independent, are on the Nov. 3 ballot, joining Markey and O’Connor.

Unopposed candidates

For some legislators in Central Mass., the pressure will be off a bit on Tuesday. 

While all House and Senate seats in the state Legislature are on the ballot, not every incumbent has an opponent.

The following lawmakers are unopposed:

  • Governor’s Council, 7th District: Democrat Paul M. DePalo, winner of the primary, is the lone candidate on the ballot. The seat has been empty.
  • U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, a Democrat representing the 3rd District, which includes Fitchburg, is unopposed.
