A team-by-team capsule look at the field for the Oklahoma City Regional:

1. Baylor

Nickname: Lady Bears. Location: Waco, Texas.

Record: 32-1, 18-0. Bid: Big 12 champ.

Last appearance: 2012, national champion.

Coach: Kim Mulkey, 28-9 in 11 appearances.

Overview: Again, the defending champs enter the tournament as the top-ranked team in college basketball. Brittney Griner, the nation's top player, is 191 points from setting the NCAA career record. She already owns the all-time blocked shots mark. Fellow unanimous all-Big 12 first-teamer Odyssey Sims is among the nation's leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Lady Bears suffered only one defeat in the past two seasons, by two points to Stanford in Hawaii on Nov. 16.

Best wins: UConn, Notre Dame, Kentucky.

Notable alumni: NFL hall of famer Mike Singletary, Olympic sprinter Michael Johnson.

2.Tennessee

Nickname: Lady Vols. Location: Knoxville.

Record: 24-7, 14-3. Bid: Southeastern at-large.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Baylor in Elite Eight.

Coach: Holly Warlick, first appearance.

Overview: Warlick faced quite the test in her first year taking over for legendary coach Pat Summitt. The Lady Vols' non-conference schedule featured tests against No. 1 Baylor, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 4 Stanford, all losses. Tennessee responded by winning the SEC regular-season title, averaging a league-best 77.9 ppg and a second-best .449 FG%. The Lady Vols are also strong on the boards, outrebounding opponents by a +6.6 margin. Leading the attack is co-SEC player of the year, junior Meighan Simmons (17.5 ppg).

Best wins: North Carolina, Texas A&M, Georgia.

Notable alumni: Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, author Kurt Vonnegut.

3. UCLA

Nickname: Bruins. Location: Los Angeles.

Record: 25-7, 14-4. Bid: Pac-12 at-large.

Last appearance: 2011, lost to Gonzaga in second round.

Coach: Cori Close, first appearance.

Overview: Injuries led to 11 different starting lineups in the regular season, but second-year coach Close's team held together and reached the Pac-12 tournament final, falling by just two to Stanford. Balanced offense with six players averaging between 7.8 and 11.5 points in the regular season. G Markel Walker tops the team in assists and steals, and is second in rebounding on a team that had a solid +7.3 rebound margin in the regular season.

Best wins: California, Oklahoma, San Diego State.

Notable alumni: Track Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee, director Rob Reiner.

4. Purdue

Nickname: Boilermakers. Location: West Lafayette, Ind.

Record: 24-8, 10-6. Bid: Big Ten champ.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to South Carolina in second round.

Coach: Sharon Versyp, 9-6 in six appearances.

Overview: The Boilermakers had lost five of their last eight regular season games before rolling through the Big Ten tournament to lock down an automatic bid. Sam Ostarello finished as the Big Ten's best rebounder.

Best wins: Nebraska, Michigan State.

Notable alumni: Chicken nugget inventor Robert C. Baker, comedian Jim Gaffigan.

5. Louisville

Nickname: Cardinals. Location: Louisville.

Record: 24-8, 11-5. Bid: Big East at-large.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Maryland in second round.

Coach: Jeff Walz, 10-4 in four appearances

Overview: One of the deepest and most balanced teams in the field, Walz uses just about everybody, and six players averaged at least 5.9 points. Gs Shoni Schimmel and Antonita Slaughter and forward Sara Hammond have led the way, with Schimmel and Slaughter the primary perimeter threats. Opponents were held to 37.9% shooting and just 28% from the arc, and the Cards have also usually done a good job on the boards.

Best wins: Texas A&M, DePaul, Villanova.

Notable alumni: Hall of Fame quarterback John Unitas; Sen. Mitch McConnell; Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman.

6. Oklahoma

Nickname: Sooners. Location: Norman.

Record: 22-10, 11-7. Bid: Big 12 at-large.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to St. John's in second round.

Coach: Sherri Coale, 26-13 in 13 appearances.

Overview: The Sooners fell behind early in their two Big 12 tournament games, rallying from 22 down to beat West Virginia before losing to Iowa State. First-team all-Big 12 G Aaryn Ellenberg is one of the top three-point shooters in college basketball, making 3.22 a game. The Sooners are undefeated this season (17-0) when leading at halftime.

Best wins: Texas Tech, Marist, Oklahoma State.

Notable alumni: Actor James Garner, Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise, NFL MVP Adrian Peterson.

7. Syracuse

Nickname: Orange. Location: Syracuse, N.Y.

Record: 24-7, 11-5. Bid: Big East at-large.

Last appearance: 2008, lost to Hartford in first round.

Coach: Quentin Hillsman, 0-1 in one appearance.

Overview: The Orange feature good balance, with five players averaging at least 7.3 points, and a stingy defense, as they surrendered only 57.1 points on average and held opponents to 34% shooting. Syracuse was fast out of the gate, with a 15-1 start, and more than held its own in the rough Big East. The Orange are led by 6-4 C Kayla Alexander, who averaged 17.3 points and 8.6 rebounds, while shooting 51.8% from the field.

Best wins: DePaul, Louisville, Villanova.

Notable alumni: Vice President Joseph Biden (Law School); Detroit mayor and Basketball Hall-of-Famer Dave Bing; astronaut Eileen Collins.

8. Florida State

Nickname: Seminoles. Location: Tallahassee.

Record: 22-9, 11-7. Bid: Atlantic Coast at-large.

Last appearance: 2011, lost Georgia in second round.

Coach: Sue Semrau, 11-8 in eight appearances.

Overview: The Seminoles have bounced back after a subpar season last year and feature one of the most balanced teams in the field, with five players having double-figure scoring averages. Leonor Rodriguez and Alexa Deluzio are the main threats from the perimeter. FSU started with 12 wins in the first 13 games, but lost five of its last eight, including a head-scratching 19-point loss to last-place Virginia Tech. One of the wins, however, was vs. Maryland.

Best wins: Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Maryland.

Notable alumni: Actor Burt Reynolds, San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

9. Princeton

Nickname: Tigers. Location: Princeton, N.J.

Record: 22-6, 13-1.Bid: Ivy League champ.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Kansas State in first round.

Coach: Courtney Banghart, 0-3 in three appearances.

Overview: The fourth consecutive appearance for the Tigers under Banghart. They saw a 33-game Ivy League winning streak end March 1. Led by 6-0 senior Niveen Rasheed, the league's top scorer and the team's leader in rebounds and assists, the Tigers won league contests by roughly 28 points on average. All six losses have been on the road, five to teams in the top 50 in RPI at the time.

Best wins: Saint Joseph's, Drexel, Rutgers.

Notable alumni: Georgetown men's basketball coach John Thompson III, First Lady Michelle Obama.

10. Creighton

Nickname: Bluejays. Location: Omaha.

Record: 24-7, 15-3. Bid: Missouri Valley at-large.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to St. John's in first round.

Coach: Jim Flanery, 0-1 in one appearance.

Overview: The Bluejays earned the first at-large bid in the Missouri Valley since 2002; Creighton was the at-large bid in '02 as well. Marissa Janning leads the team in scoring with 13 points a game, while Sarah Nelson contributes 11.8 points and 7.9 rebounds a game.

Best wins: Illinois State, Nebraska.

Notable alumni: Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, NBA player Kyle Korver.

11. Central Michigan

Nickname: Chippewas. Location: Mount Pleasant.

Record: 21-11, 12-4. Bid: Mid-American champ.

Last appearance: 1984, lost to Alabama in first round.

Coach: Sue Guevara, 1-3 in three appearances.

Overview: The Chippewas defeated Bowling Green, regular-season champ Toledo and Akron to claim the MAC tournament title and their first NCAA bid in 29 years — after losing No. 2 scorer Jessica Green to a knee injury in late February. All-MAC G Crystal Bradford (15.1 points, 10.1 rebounds a game in regular season) tops the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks.

Best wins: Texas, South Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Notable alumni: Actor Jeff Daniels, broadcaster Dick Enberg.

12. Middle Tennessee

Nickname: Blue Raiders. Location: Murfreesboro.

Record: 25-7, 17-3.Bid: Sun Belt champ.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Vanderbilt in first round.

Coach: Rick Insell, 1-6 in six appearances.

Overview: MTSU's challenging non-conference slate, including SEC powers Tennessee and Kentucky , didn't produce results in the win column. But it did prepare the Raiders for the league campaign. Ebony Rowe (20 ppg) and Kortni Jones (16.2) are this year's leaders.

Best wins: Arkansas-Little Rock, Western Kentucky.

Notable alumni: Country singer Hillary Scott, economist James McGill Buchanan.

13. Liberty

Nickname: Flames. Location: Lynchburg, Va.

Record: 27-6, 16-2 Bid: Big South champ.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Notre Dame in first round.

Coach: Carey Green, 2-11 in 11 appearances.

Overview: Flames making 15th appearance in 17 seasons. They enter on a 14-game winning streak dating to Jan. 19. But Liberty has not reached the NCAA second round since 2005. Dominant rebounding (+17.5 a game margin) with four players averaging better than six a game.

Best wins: Winthrop, Sacred Heart.

Notable alumni: ESPN's Samantha Ponder, former MLB player Sid Bream.

14. Stetson

Nickname: Hatters. Location: DeLand, Fla.

Record: 24-8, 14-4 Bid: Atlantic Sun champ.

Last appearance: 2011, lost to Tennessee in first round.

Coach: Lynn Bria, 0-2 in two appearances.

Overview: Hatters avenged two regular-season losses to defending champion Florida Gulf Coast to win the A-Sun tournament. Balanced scoring club with three starters in double figures and strong at the line, shooting nearly 73% as a group.

Best wins: Florida Gulf Coast, Mercer.

Notable alumni: Country singer Wilma Burgess, Atlanta Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay.

15. Oral Roberts

Nickname: Golden Eagles. Location: Tulsa.

Record: 18-12, 13-5.Bid: Southland champ.

Last appearance: 2008, lost to Tennessee in first round.

Coach: Misti Cussen, first appearance.

Overview: In Cussen's first season at ORU, it tied for first in the Southland with Sam Houston State in the regular season, but earned the tournament berth by downing the Bearkats in the title game. Senior guard Kevi Luper, the Southland player of the year, has amassed more than 2,800 career points, putting her among the top 20 in Division I history.

Best wins: Tulsa, Sam Houston State.

Notable alumni: Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann (law school), TV personality Kathie Lee Gifford.

16. Prairie View

Nickname: Panthers. Location: Prairie View, Texas.

Record: 17-14, 11-7.Bid: SWAC champ.

Last appearance: 2012, lost to Connecticut in first round.

Coach: Toyelle Wilson, 0-1 in one appearance.

Overview: Prairie View got hot at the right time and enters the tournament on an eight-game winning streak, the last a four-OT thriller against Mississippi Valley State for the SWAC title. Latia Williams led the Panthers through the regular season in scoring (12.6 avg.) and rebounding (8.9). Kiara Etienne is the top long-range threat, sinking eight threes in the SWAC final.

Best wins: Hampton, Texas Southern.

Notable alumni: En Vogue singer Terry Ellis, Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.
