Cochlear Hearprint is an innovative Chrome plugin that calibrates online audio content to suit users’ hearing ability. Created to promote Cochlear’s implants, it was inspired by findings showing that 12% of Australians suffer hearing loss but take an average of seven years to seek help – a delay that can lead to depression and social isolation.

The plugin was promoted via a dedicated website, which featured video interviews with people whose lives had been improved by the implants. People had to set their Hearprint to watch the films, completing a short test that identified whether their hearing was ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’. People with ‘abnormal’ results were offered a free consultation with Cochlear, and all users were given a visualisation of their hearing ability and the option to install Hearprint on their device.

The Hearprint plugin can be updated over time – alerting users to changes in their hearing – and automatically adjusts all audio content on a user’s device once installed. More than 5,000 people had set their Hearprint within three months, and over 50% of those were identified as abnormal – generating new leads for Cochlear while alerting people to potential hearing loss.
