River Shumate, Joe Heinonen lead Finlandia men’s basketball

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Republic-Michigamme graduate River Shumate and Superior Central grad Joe Heinonen shared scoring honors for Finlandia University with nine points each as the Lions fell to 0-2 this season with a 112-49 loss at Wisconsin-Platteville in a college men’s basketball game played Sunday.

Each sophomore made a 3-pointer as Shumate also grabbed three rebounds and made two steals.

Platteville went on 10-0 and 8-0 runs early in the game to take a 20-5 lead and never looked back. In between them, Heinonen made a high-arcing triple.

On Friday, the Lions opened the season with a 112-73 loss at Dubuque, Iowa. Heinonen had seven points, making all three of his free throw attempts, and five rebounds, while Shumate had three points on the only 3-pointer he attempted to go with two rebounds and an assist.

That game was last tied at 10-10 as Finlandia stayed within single digits for the game’s first 12 minutes before Dubuque pulled away for a 59-39 halftime lead.

The Lions open their home season at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Lakeland, Wisconsin.
