Cops and Robbers have a hit

On Sunday September 11 the Tablelands Police Golf Association held their annual ‘Cops and Robbers’ Charity Golf Day.

Atherton turned on a beautiful day and with the most players in the six year history of the event, the day was off to a good start.

It didn’t matter if you were young or old or just young at heart, a hacker or a scratch golfer, the day saw 126 golfers (and that term is used loosely) have a fun day out. The day helped develop new and reinforce old relationships between police and the local community.

Young or old, everyone had a great day

Young or old, everyone had a great day

This year funds were raised for Blue Care Atherton and Mareeba, Police Legacy, and four local families who are suffering long term serious medical conditions including Coral Smith, a QPS Administration Officer who has stage 4 Oesophageal Cancer and Missy Clarkson, a 9 year-old from Malanda who is in Brisbane having treatment for Leukaemia.

The ‘Fun Police’ were on-hand throughout the day issuing fines for indiscretions detected on the course which included any bad behaviour, sledging of opposition teams, poor dress standards or even just looking at the ‘Fun Police’ the wrong way! A big thank you goes to Honeycomb Tolga for providing an ATV as the drinks cart to help everyone stay hydrated.

Organiser and local police officer, Sergeant Greg Lee said it was a great day and thanked everyone for their generosity.

“It is a lot of hard work to organise this event but the support we get from the community is outstanding,” Sergeant Lee said.

“I would like to thank our major sponsors, Trinity Pertroleum, and Asture Financial, who helped us raise $19,000. The support of local and out of town businesses was instrumental in raising these funds and a huge ‘Thank you’ goes out to all those businesses and individuals who donated in any way for this event.”

Whilst the day isn’t about who wins or who loses, or who gets fined the most or who dresses the worst, the winners of the prestigious Archie Eyres Trophy (must have at least one serving or retired police officer in the team) were PCSC Simon Armstrong and Mick Gadsby.
