BETHESDA, MD — Confirmed coronavirus cases in Montgomery County climbed by 83 on Wednesday, while the death toll grew by three

The latest update from the Maryland Health Department brings the countywide total to 18,641 infections and 767 fatalities.

Another 39 may have died from COVID-19 — the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus — but a laboratory test is still needed to confirm the cause of death.

The county — which is home to roughly 1.1 million people — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 24,098, according to the latest figures.

Statewide, there have been 97,384 confirmed cases, 3,474 confirmed deaths, and 138 "probable deaths."

Of the 488 people currently being hospitalized, 117 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
