A block of flats is engulfed in roaring flames with thick smoke rising through the air in Brighton.

Dramatic video footage and pictures from the scene show the huge fire as bright orange flames cover the building.

Fire crews are advising people living nearby to close their windows and doors as a witness describes a "scene of devastation".

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are at the scene tackling the blaze at the residential block.

They tweeted: "We are currently in attendance at a fire in a residential property on Pankhurst Avenue, Brighton.

"Firefighters from Brighton, Roedean, Lewes, Hove and Barcombe are on scene.

"We are advising all nearby residents to close their windows and doors as a precaution."

Shortly after, they added: "We are still tackling a large fire at a residential block of flats on Pankhurst Road, Brighton.

"We now have ten appliances in attendance."

One social media user tweeted: "There's a fire in Brighton. Can see and smell smoke from the centre of town."

Another described the fire as "awful scenes".

There are not thought to be any injuries, according to The Argus.

A witness said: "It's a scene of devastation.

"The police are going through the building to check everyone is out."
