Longtime School Administrator

W. Dean Holden, 76, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in a local hospital.

He was a native of McMinn County, Tenn., and the son of the late C.C. Holden Sr. and Margaret Holden. He was a longtime resident of Chattanooga. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church. He was veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a former mayor of Englewood, Tenn. He was a former principal of Englewood High School during the 1950s and a former principal of Etowah High School in the early 1960s. He retired in 1991 as an administrator with the Chattanooga public school system, having spent the last two years as principal of Kirkman High School. In the last few years, he taught GED classes at various locations in Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Cooper and Loyce Holden; three brothers, Charles Holden, Wayne Holden and John Lloyd Holden.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sara Barnett Holden of Chattanooga; three sons, Geoff Holden of Soddy-Daisy, Scott Holden of Hixson and Todd Holden of Hixson; two daughters-in-law, Terry Holden of Soddy-Daisy and Tami Holden of Hixson; two sisters, Sue Scott of Warrensburg, Mo., and Fannye Rorer of Williamsburg, Va.; brother, Hugh Holden of Knoxville; two sisters-inlaw, Bobbie Holden of Englewood and Lib Wood of Maryville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Cara, Emily, Olivia, Andrew and Kelsey Holden; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Englewood, with Dr. Richard Holden officiating.

Interment will be in McMinn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Englewood.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Englewood Textile Museum, P.O. Box 253, Englewood, TN 37329.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
