Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Program was supposed to be up and running in September.

But more than two months have passed.

So, when will patients be able to buy legal pot? Growers, distributors and the state say soon.

Wednesday, we went inside one of the states 25 medical marijuana cultivators in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Cresco Labs said their plants are nearly full grown and they said they will be ready to distribute, with permission from the state, by New Year’s Day.

“It’s a little over a year since we broke ground here,” said Dennis Plamondon, director of cultivation for Cresco Labs.

Now, Cresco Labs’ 400 cannabis plants are just a few weeks away from being harvested.

“To have these plants here so, so close to being harvested and ready for the patients, it’s extremely exciting and a long time coming,” said Plamondon.

Plomondon said it’s worth the wait for Ohio to have a first-class program.

“We’re right at the finish line,” said Plomondon. “The little delay was for the better of the patients and the programs.”

The state still doesn’t have an exact rollout date, but Plomondon said they’ll be ready to distribute to patients in need by the first of the year.

“They’ve had a long wait and to see the light at the end of the tunnel to get the relief they’ve been waiting on is great and it’s almost here,” he said.

The state said two big things still have to happen before patients can buy medical marijuana in Ohio.

The marijuana cultivated has to be lab tested for safety. And, at least one dispensary must be certified to operate. That is expected to happen next week.

The state said 10 cultivators have received certificates of operation and are growing or preparing to grow medical marijuana and an additional 15 are building out their facilities.

Five testing labs, 14 processors and 56 dispensaries have received provisional licenses and are building out their facilities. Officials also said 319 physicians have received certificates to recommend medical marijuana.
