A four-story, 137,000 square-foot health center serving women and babies has broken ground at the Providence St. Joseph Hospital campus in Orange.

Crews on Tuesday began work on the new facility, which will occupy a space on the corner of Main Street and Stewart Drive. Orange Mayor Mark Murphy, Orange County Supervisor Donald Wagner and Bishop of Orange, the Most Rev. Kevin Vann showed support for the new development at a ceremony on the construction site.
The Helen Caloggero Women’s and Family Center – named after the mother of a large donor to the project – will streamline services for women and families, hospital officials said, bringing “mother-baby services that currently are at nine different locations around the hospital to one central location.”
Numerous health resources for women, including pelvic health and rehab services, assessments for mothers and their babies, mental health services and a pharmacy, will be offered at the center.
A portion of the facility will also become a new natural birthing center, “where women can receive the individualized care that midwives provide in a home-like setting,” a news release said. Food, retail and office spaces are among other features of the eventual site.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this wide array of services in a beautiful, new and convenient location for our patients, as it will truly ease their way in accessing our top-of-the-line caregivers and the latest innovative technology in one single location,” Michelle Genova, chief nursing officer at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, said in the news release.
The center is expected to open in 2023. St. Joseph Hospital Foundation is still fundraising $2.3 million for the new facility.
