SOUTH BOUND BROOK - A Main Street landmark for decades and damaged by fire is being demolished to make way for a mixed use development.

The official groundbreaking for Beacon on Main will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday near Borough Hall.

Beacon on Main, to be developed by Landmark Companies, will replace the South Side Grille that was damaged by fire in February 2016. The property is next to Borough Hall.

Groundbreaking for the Beacon On Main project in South Bound Brook will be Wednesday morning.

Beacon on Main will have 18 apartments and 3,000 square feet of commercial space.

“The Borough of South Bound Brook has worked tirelessly and diligently to redevelop the property which will be a great addition to the borough and its residents” said Mayor Chris Shoffner.

The most prominent feature of the three-story building will be a clock tower at its northern end facing the Queen's Bridge across the Raritan River from Bound Brook, the primary gateway to South Bound Brook.

The development is expected to open in spring 2022.

The South Side Grill, vac ant since a fire four years ago, will be replaced by the Beacon on Main.

Demolition of the bar building started this month.

“We are thrilled to break ground on our second project in South Bound Brook and bring the borough’s redevelopment vision to life,” said Matt Leshetz, vice president of construction for Landmark Companies.

In 2018 Landmark Companies received a Somerset County Land Development and Planning Award  for Gramercy Townhomes, a 22-unit development also on Main Street.

Beacon on Main Street is the latest project in the long-term revitalization of the borough's Main Street that has included a QuickChek and the Riverbrook Walk community on the former GAF factory site.

Two of the prime attractions of South Bound Brook are its location near New Brunswick and the NJ Transit station in Bound Brook, a walk across the Queen's Bridge.

Landmark Companies, based in Woodbridge, manages more than 3,200 apartments in northern and central New Jersey.
