Law enforcement officers escorted two white hearses carrying a Guyton couple who died in a car accident while coming home from Georgia Southern’s season-opening football game against LSU.

A community grieved the deaths of Danny and Julie Hagan as they were laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Savannah Tuesday.

The vibrant couple was returning from a trip celebrating their 25th anniversary when the 2017 Nissan Altima that Hagan drove hydroplaned and struck a tree in the Interstate 16 median near Swainsboro on Sept. 1. Hagan, 45, died at the scene and Julie Hagan, 43, died later at a hospital from injuries received in the accident.

Georgia Southern and LSU fans and members of the community mourned the deaths of the couple, whose three children are students at Georgia Southern – Josh, 20, Matt, 20, and Maddie, 19.

The procession traveled from the funeral at Countryside Baptist Church in Guyton to the Savannah cemetery.

GoFundMe accounts were set up to benefit the children by people from both universities, and by Powerco Federal Credit Union, where Julie Hagan worked for 22 years. The credit union’s Savannah branch closed Tuesday for the funeral.

Madison Hagan said on her Facebook page that her parents are in a beautiful place and she can’t wait to see their faces again. “They were full of life and happiness and they were always smiling,” she said. “They lit up any room.”
