Wakaalat from Home web series review: Sumeet Vyas, Nidhi Singh and Kubbra Sait's chemistry makes this a fun detox on divorce

India's second desktop web series has arrived after the much enjoyable The Gone Game, and just like the Voot show, Amazon Prime's Wakaalat from Home, too, explores a lockdown theme. The similarities don't end there through. While you can blow through The Gone Game's four episodes of about 25-30 minutes each faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy girdle in the middle of August, the Sumeet Vyas-Nidhi Singh-Kubbra Sait show is also extremely short and snappy, with each of its 10 episodes clocking in at no more than 12-15 minutes each. Another similarity lies in how both their contents click, ensuring you look forward to the next season. Now the obvious difference is that the former is a thriller while Wakaalat from Home slots into the comedy genre, but it's still a comedy that keeps you guessing about what happens next (a must for any successful web show) beside being fresh and genuinely funny.

What's it about

Needless to say, this entails copious humorous banter between the four and also leads to some unexpected developments.

What's hot

Though not a laugh riot by any stretch, Wakaalat from Home ensures there's a perpetual smile plastered across visage mixed with regular doses of chuckles and guffaws. That's not to say the occasional rib-tickling joke is absent. Points must also be given to creator-writer Anubhav Pal and director Rohan Sippy (yes, the Bollywood filmmaker and Ramesh Sippy's son) for keeping the narrative interesting in a premise where monotony could have so easily crept in, and for adding some fun twists centred on Rajini Tacker, which keep things unpredictable sans diluting the fun vibe. However, the biggest winners here are the dialogues and performances (especially that of Kubbra Sait and Gopal Dutt), which form the roots on which this Amazon Prime web series branches out into a breezily entertaining watch.

What's not

Nothing much to complain about here, except for probably one or two episodes, which neither say nor entertain much, but at their runtime, you hardly even notice it. Wakaalat from Home is not a great show because it never aspires to be one. It knows what it is, sticks to its plan, and that is to entertain us while it lasts, without thinking about it much afterward.

BL Verdict

If you're in the mood for a good laugh and don't mind not consuming content that doesn't stay with you long after, then Wakaalat from Home is just the quick fix you need. After all, it doesn't hurt to rest your brain every once in a while during these stressful times. I'm going with 3 out of 5 stars.
