10 things we learned from Florida Gators’ 24-20 win over Miami Hurricanes

The Gators' pass rush was on point. UF corralled elusive Miami QB Jarren Williams for 11 sacks -- more than any game last season. Highly touted Louisville graduate transfer Jon Greenard did not stand out last spring, but he was everywhere Saturday night, finishing with five tackles, two for loss (1.5 sacks).

Tailback Lamical Perine's route-running and pass-catching ability are going to come in handy. If the line cannot hold up, leaving short, quick passes as one of the few options. A season after catching just 13 passes, he had five Saturday night, including a touchdown.

Tight ends continue to cause the Gators' defense problems. Miami's Brevin Jordan caught passes of 18, 15 and 10 yards on the Canes' opening field-goal drive and later caught a 25-yard touchdown with no one near him.

The Turnover Chain was an albatross around the Gators' necks. With a chance to take an early 14-3, a first-and-goal fumble by QB Feleipe Franks stalled UF's offensive momentum. A Malik Davis fumble the next series killed it. Two fourth-quarter picks could have been the dagger.

Dan Mullen coaches without a filter. The Gators' followed a fake punt on fourth-and-3 by Orlando's Tommy Townsend from the UF 28 with their only first-half score. Mullen continued to ignore conventional wisdom, converting two more fourth downs during the game's opening 16 minutes.

Van Jefferson is embracing the gunner role for the Gators. The fifth-year senior is in his first season covering punts, but he made an immediate impact. Jefferson's fumble recovery set up the go-ahead score. He also downed a punt on the Miami 5.

Showing up in a UF golf shirt, Urban Meyer has no shame. Meyer must be restless during first August without coaching football since 2011 - the season after he bailed on the Gators. Doesn't he still work for Ohio State?

The Gators' inexperienced O-line was exposed. UF managed just 52 rushing yards, eliminating the effectiveness of play-action calls and too often gave QB Feleipe Franks little time. A unit replacing four starters and with the second-fewest starts in the nation has to grow up quickly.

The confident, new-and-improved Feleipe Franks looked a lot like the older model that was unsure and inconsistent. Franks did not pick up where he left off during a season-ending four-winning streak. A struggling offensive line did not help. Two critical complete passes of 65 and 66 yards camouflaged a night when Franks had three turnovers and was consistently off the mark, too often throwing short of the chains on third down and holding the football rather than making a decision.

Kadarius Toney's touches are too few and far between. The first time the Gators gave Toney the ball, he scored a 66-yard touchdown while making five Miami defenders miss. Toney touched the ball two more times the rest of the half as UF's offense struggled.
