Miami-Dade Reports 700th Coronavirus Death; FL Has 55,424 Cases

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Miami-Dade County reported its 700th death from the coronavirus Saturday as Florida health officials reported 34 new deaths and 131 new hospitalizations in the state. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 55,424.

Saturday's case total represents an increase of 927 new cases over the previous 24-hour period throughout Florida. The state's death toll from the virus rose to 2,447 Saturday, up from 2,413.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, has been at the epicenter of Florida's outbreak along with neighboring Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Those three South Florida counties account for 30,791 cases — or some 55 percent of Florida's total confirmed cases.

Eleven Florida counties reported 34 new deaths Saturday compared to 49 new deaths Friday, 45 deaths Thursday, 61 deaths Wednesday, seven deaths Tuesday, 15 new deaths Monday, four deaths Sunday and 43 deaths last Saturday. One Florida county reported one fewer death on Saturday.

Miami-Dade County reported 15 new deaths. Broward County reported five new deaths. Palm Beach County reported two new deaths.

Lee County reported four new deaths. Hillsborough County reported two new deaths.

Levy County reported its first death from the virus. Charlotte County reported one new death as did Duval County, Indian River County, Manatee County and Marion County.

Miami-Dade reported 17,826 confirmed cases of the virus Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 7,067 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 5,898 cases.

Florida had a 5.6 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a total of 995,886 tests that had been administered as of Saturday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 10,113, up from 9,982 a day earlier.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 2,129 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,976 cases.
