Teen, 18, is charged with first-degree murder for shooting dead father-of-two who walked over to his car and hit him in face through his window during road rage attack

An 18-year-old man has been charged for fatally shooting a father-of-two who hit him in the face during a road rage argument.  

Jonathan Mejia is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in the shooting death of 46-year-old Scott Mattison in broad daylight at 5:20 p.m. on Sunday.  

A prosecutor told a Cook County courtroom on Wednesday that the quarrel between both men started when Mattison, of Glendale Heights, was trying to back his pickup truck into his driveway. 

Mejia pulled up in a white Ford sedan and went around Mattison instead of letting him finish pulling in, the prosecutor added. 

Mattison then pulled in front of Mejia causing him to stop on Bartlett Road near Oltendorf Road.

Dashcam footage caught the moment when Mattison got out of his truck before approaching Mejia's sedan. 

A brief argument occurred, according to the prosecutor, and after words were exchanged, Mattison reached inside the vehicle and struck Mejia in the face. 

Law enforcement said Mattison was then shot several times near his liver, his spleen and on the chest, by a 9 mm handgun. In the video, he is seen taking a couple of steps backs on the road.

Arick Lopez, who was walking nearby with his dogs during the incident, recorded parts of the shooting on his cellphone before posting it on Snapchat. He told police that Mattison had nothing in his hands when he was shot, according to prosecutors.

'I heard a couple shots,' Lopez told CBS Chicago. 'There was arguing, one thing led to another, and consequences came.'

After the shooting, Mejia drove to the Streamwood Police Department to tell them his version of events, the prosecutor said. 

Mattison was was rushed to AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center shortly after being found police, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Law attorney, Al Kola, has asked for a 'reasonable' bond for Meija in front of court on Wednesday. He described his client as a 'family man', who attended school online and had voluntarily given himself up to police shortly after the shooting. 

However, authorities said Mejia had been previously known as a juvenile delinquent for an offense of discharging a firearm. 

Those closest to Mattison have said that their friend did not deserve to be suddenly shot and killed on the side of a busy road, no matter what both men were arguing about.

'He didn't deserve to die; to be gunned down the way he was,' Kevin Polka, who was Mattison's boss and one of his closest friend, told CBS Chicago. 'He always was about his daughters,' he added. 

The pair worked together at Polka's small business, called Paragon Mechanic Inc. Mattison worked as a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning installer (HVAC).  

When asked if he was stunned by Mattison's involvement in the quarrel, Polka said:  

'I don't know if it surprised me, of if I just – I know if he didn't, he would be here today. Scott made mistakes, he did. He wasn't perfect by any means.'

Mattison leaves behind two young – and a friend with many unanswered questions.

'If every time someone screws up, if that's the consequence, where are we at?' Polka said. 'What are we left with?'

Since his passing, Mattison's co-workers have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe to help his daughters and to cover funeral costs. 

As of Wednesday evening, nearly $15,355 has been raised of a $30,000 goal.

Meija, for now, is being held without bail and his next scheduled court appearance is on March 25.

Prosecutors said he could face 45 years to life in prison if he pleads guilty to first-degree murder.
