MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – The beach at Duck Lake State Park has reopened, but an E. coli contamination advisory continues for another beach in Muskegon County.
The beach on Duck Lake at the state park was closed by the state of Michigan Tuesday July 9, due to high E. coli levels.
The two-day closure was lifted on Thursday, July 11, after E. coli plummeted from 1,986 per 100 ml. to 20, testing results show.
However, the E. coli levels at Maple Grove Park beach on White Lake in Montague increased, follow-up test results show. A water advisory for that beach was issued Tuesday, July 9.
Testing done on Tuesday showed 365 E. coli per 100 ml., but on Wednesday, that number jumped to 488, according to results posted on the state’s BeachGuard web site. The maximum is 300.
Last year, Maple beach was closed due to high E. coli from July 12-17 and was under a contamination advisory from July 17-26, according to BeachGuard.
It was closed for 20 days in July 2017, when eleveated E. coli levels were attributed to wildlife, the BeachGuard site shows.
