Regenerative medicine to fuel demand for stem cell specialists
Professional programmes in Regenerative Medicine will help the students in devising new methods for the treatment of degenerative diseases, writes Shruti Niraj
Regenerative medicine is the most recent advancement in medical treatment, offering novel therapeutic approaches to replace or restore the original functions of tissues, functional systems or even entire organs. It has, therefore, given rise to a growing demand for graduates specialising in stem cell research.
Sharda University has recently launched BTech, MSc, and PG diploma courses in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine aimed at training the students in devising new methods for early intervention treatments for traumatic injury or degenerative diseases, by regrowth or replacement of cells or tissues.

Course details
The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge of engineering, biology, and biomechanical principles, and evaluation of biological and health systems and products, such as artificial organs, prostheses, instrumentation, medical information systems, and health care and management in the students.
One-year certificate course and short term training programmes in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine are also offered to students who want to pursue a career in biomedical or
life sciences. The BTech and MSc graduates can pursue a career in Pharmaceutical sector, Biological Sciences, Healthcare or Stem Cell departments as a production engineers, quality control analyst, etc. at various Indian and international medical organisations.
Key areas where stem cell therapy can result in effective treatment are Neurological conditions, Orthopedics, Chronic Kidney Diseases, COPD and other Lung diseases, Liver Diseases, Cardiology, Autoimmune disorders, Ophthalmolic diseases, Infertility and Cosmetic Procedures.
Eligibility
Graduates from various engineering courses can apply for two-year MSc programme, whereas students from Science stream with minimum 70% of aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Maths are eligible to apply for the BTech programme The aspirants interested in the BTech programme have to appear for the Sharda University Aptitude Test (SUAT) followed by the personal interview. The programme fee for the BTech course is around Rs 1, 64,000 per annum while for MSc it is Rs 1, 50,000 per annum.
