THOMASVILLE — A Georgia Department of Transportation inspection of Thomas County bridges shows several wooden bridges on dirt roads need repairs, but none to the point the structures should be closed.

The wooden bridges include two on Whitney Camp Road and one each on Beeline, Patten Speedway and Cone roads.

A concrete bridge on paved Stage Road also needs repairs, said Tony Bodiford, Thomas County public works director, who delivered the bridge report to the commission public works committee at a Wednesday meeting.

Most concrete bridges are in good shape, said county Commissioner Ken Hickey, public works committee chairman.

Some wood pilings will have to be replaced on wooden bridges, Hickey said.

The commissioner added that the county's dirt roads are not heavily-traveled.

Some of the bridges requiring repairs might require closing while wood pilings are replaced, but only for short periods of time.

Two concrete bridges are in need of repairs as a result of vehicle crashes.

A concrete bridge on Rocky Ford Road has no structural damages, but cosmetic work and replacement of a guard rail are needed at a cost of about $3,000.

A recent vehicle crash on a Metcalfe Road concrete bridge will require about $7,500 in repairs, Hickey said.

"We're in pretty good shape as far as our bridges," the commissioner said.
