Elle Fanning's No-Makeup Selfie Shows off Her Eczema
Her photos are helping followers feel seen.
By now we should all recognize that perfect skin is a myth—though the fact that celebrities and influencers still post photos with face filters and careful editing to disguise their perceived "flaws" doesn’t always make that fact reassuring. That’s why Elle Fanning’s latest Instagram post is so refreshing. The 22-year old actor not only posted a makeup-free selfie but showed off how she was embracing eczema on her eyelids as though it were a shade of eyeshadow.
Fanning shared a few makeup-free selfies in her post, along with the caption, "Eczema but make it eye shadow 😜.”
Her skin looks glowing, and it seems like she's wearing a very comfy at-home outfit, which makes the post all the more relatable.

The comment section of the post is flooded with comments from people saying they felt “seen” by the photos. Some commenters shared that they have the same problem of eczema popping up only on the eyelid area. Others thanked Fanning for being raw and real on an app that sometimes celebrates fakeness. “Thank you for not using like a dozen filters, it's so nice seeing real normal skin texture on this app and it makes me feel good about myself,” wrote one commenter.
According to the National Eczema Association, nearly 32 million people in the U.S. have some form of eczema, making it pretty common. The condition often causes patches of the skin to become itchy, dry, and cracked, resulting in a red area or rash. Most times, it’s caused by genetics, but it can also be brought on or exacerbated by certain food allergies. Additionally, irritants such as soaps, detergents, fragrances, and certain fabrics can further irritate the skin in people with eczema, so it requires the extra step of looking for products that are safe and mild.
Depending on the severity of the condition, eczema can be annoying and uncomfortable, so we love to see Fanning be real, and being positive about her skin. We need more of this on social media. Period.
