A huge fire which has been raging on a moorland near Bolton for days is finally under control.

Up to 60 firefighters have been tackling the blaze on Darwen Moor since Saturday (May 30).

It is believed the fire was started by a barbeque. The person responsible has been spoken to by police.

Crews were first called to the scene just off Bolton Road at around 6pm.

Dozens of firefighters remained on the moors over the weekend and ten crews were still tackling the blaze last night.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire had finally been contained this morning.

Crews will spend the rest of the day dampening down.

The service said: “The fire on Darwen moor is now under control. At 8am this morning, eight fire engines will be at the scene and firefighters will be damping down hot spots.

“Three fire engines are at Longridge fell and firefighters there are maintaining a watching brief this morning.”
