Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Kicks Off National Fire Prevention Week

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue (TFR) kicked off National Fire Prevention Week on Sunday as this year's theme focuses on fire safety in the kitchen.

National Fire Prevention Week takes place Oct. 4-10, with TFR planning a slate of events to promote fire safety and awareness in the community.

"Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires not only across the United States but here in Tuscaloosa," TFR said in a media release. "Although we are not able to have our annual fire expo to kick off fire prevention week, we are adapting to the changes and continuing to spread the message of fire prevention throughout the city."

While each day will have a different educational event planned, the entire week will see an initiative called Chalk It Up with Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue. TFR says the department has partnered with the Art Garage in downtown Tuscaloosa to get the public inspired to use their creativity with sidewalk chalk and send pictures of their fire safety drawings to be judged at the end of the week.
