COVID-19 hospitalizations down by more than 100 in Pa.: update

Pennsylvania hospitals were caring for 2,900 COVID-19 patients as of Friday morning, down from more than 3,000 earlier this week.

That included 668 in intensive care, down from nearly 700 earlier in the week.

Pennsylvania reported 4,496 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, fewer than the previous day, and another possible sign the state has entered the downward side of the surge that began in early July.

The state’s seven-day average of new cases stood at 3,940 on Wednesday, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins. It had reached 5,235 in early October.

Pennsylvania reported 88 new COVID-19 deaths on Friday, raising its toll to 30,903.

The state said Friday that 71.1% of Pennsylvanians 18 or older are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Pennsylvania as of Wednesday was averaging about 50,000 vaccinations per day, although many of them involved booster shots rather than new people becoming vaccinated.
