Man leads San Angelo police on chase after reportedly fleeing in patrol vehicle, crashing into house

A San Angelo Police officer was injured after a man drove off in a patrol vehicle early Wednesday and crashed into a residence, according to a news release.

On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, police arrived at a residence in the 600 block of Macann to investigate a possible domestic disturbance. Officers found a man on the front porch they later identified as Michael Rodriguez, age 24.

A police spokesperson said officers tried to interact with Rodriguez who ran from police through the back door of the residence, a news release stated.

An officer who found Rodriguez attempted to apprehend him, but the officer sustained an injury that resulted in Rodriguez being able to get away, a news release stated.

Rodriguez entered a parked SAPD patrol unit and drove it away, leading to “a slow-speed pursuit” that ended at a residence in the 1500 block of Woodruff after Rodriguez crashed the patrol unit into the side of a residence, a news release stated.

“Officers were then able to quickly take Rodriguez into custody. Rodriguez was transported to Shannon Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries for treatment, a news release stated.

Police said Rodriguez was medically cleared at Shannon and was charged with a violation of a bond/protective order, evading arrest/detention with serious bodily Injury, evading arrest/detention in a motor vehicle, and various county warrants.

A police spokesperson said additional charges may be forthcoming as the incident is investigated further.

The injured SAPD Officer was transported to Shannon Medical Center for his injuries and was released Wednesday morning.
