3.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Los Angeles, triggers about a dozen burglar alarms: LAPD

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake was reported in the Los Angeles area around 12:20 a.m. Friday and centered in Compton, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to seismologist Lucy Jones, the small quake was near the Newport-Inglewood fault and was about 15 miles deep.

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted receiving about a dozen burglar alarm calls since the tremor, but “otherwise business as usual.”  

A 1.4 magnitude quake centered a little over a mile away from Compton was recorded about an hour after, according to KCAL-TV.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The earthquake comes after the nation’s first statewide quake warning system debuted in California on Thursday, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that ravaged the San Francisco Bay area on Oct. 17, 1989.

The threshold for an alert through the ShakeAlert app is an earthquake of magnitude 4.5, according to USGS.
