Corpus Christi artist Jeremy Flores selected to participate in Art Basel Miami Beach

Local artist Jeremy Flores knew art could take him to an unlimited number of places, but that didn't make him less surprised when it actually did.

Flores, 31, is responsible for some of the most recognizable murals in Corpus Christi, including the hummingbird on the side of Studio 44 and the Corpus Christi postcard mural.

Thanks to his artwork in the Coastal Bend, Flores was selected to be featured in this year's Art Basel, an international art show in Miami Beach, Florida.

"It's definitely a blessing to be a part of (the Art Basel)," Flores said. "I'm grateful to be a part of this. I'm very humbled to be here doing what I love."

Flores' trip to Florida stretches from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6 and has consisted of many different artistic activities.

While in Florida, Flores has been given the opportunity to paint murals at multiple local schools. On Friday, he will be participating in a shoe painting event with students and other up-and-coming artists.

"This is going to be a really big event, and it's super cool for everyone," Flores said. "I just knew if I put in work that this might be possible, but I couldn't imagine how developed it is now."

Flores will leave his impression on art not only in Florida, but possibly the entire southeastern United States. The 31-year-old decided to drive from the Coastal Bend to Florida in a car wrapped with photos of his art.

"It's kind of putting Corpus Christi on the map for a place like this that isn't used to seeing Texas or something like this," Flores said. "I see (people asking about Corpus Christi) a lot."

Having been born and raised in Corpus Christi, Flores hopes his art will inspire other artists in the Coastal Bend.

"I just want people in Corpus Christi to see that (art) can be a reality," Flores said. "(Art) has shown me that you can come from small place and do things on a larger scale, even if it's in your community."
