John (Jay) Wesley Grove Jr., 73, of Shenandoah Junction, WV and formerly of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, after a long courageous battle with cancer.Born April 20, 1947 in Hagerstown, MD, Jay was the son of the late John Wesley and Carrie “Kitten” (Keyton) Grove, Sr.He proudly served 27 years in the US Navy and retired as a Chief Gunner’s Mate. He also retired from Flowserve Pump Corporation. He graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1966.In addition to his loving wife of 53 years, Sarah Ann Grove, he is survived by his son John Wesley Grove, 3rd (and wife Kathy) of Hagerstown, MD, grandsons, Joshua Wesley Grove and Jacob Kenneth Grove, sister Andrea Whittington (and husband William) of Annapolis, one niece, three nephews and his faithful furbabies, Zippy and Duke.He was preceded in death by his sister, Marylyn Travers.He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, NMCB 23 Chief Petty Officer Association and the North American Rod and Gun Club.Above all else he loved his family, his country, the US Navy and like his father, he could talk forever about anything as long as anyone would listen. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandsons grow into fine young men. He also loved his workshop, making crafts and his old historic stone home. He will be remembered for his true generosity and kindness of spirit and his devotion and love of his family, country and close friends.The family would like to thank Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda physicians, nurses and caregivers for the excellent care given to the Chief.Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
