Richard Bradley McCall, 81, of Avon, joined his beloved wife, the late Maureen (Silver) McCall, in heaven, Friday, August 16, 2019, with his daughter and grandsons by his side. He was born in Hartford on July 2, 1938 to the late Harold and Henrietta (Saunders) McCall. Richard was raised in Hartford and was a graduate of St. Augustine and Bulkeley High School. He moved his family to Avon from Hartford in 1970. He was an active communicant of the Church of Saint Ann and member of the Glastonbury Irish American Society and The Ancient Order of Hibernians; America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization. After graduation, he attained the rank of Sergeant in the Connecticut Air National Guard, also served in the Air Force Reserves, and then became a Police Officer with West Hartford Police Department. Richard had 43 years of service working for the State of Connecticut. His career began working for the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Consumer Protection. Much of his career was what he had passion for as a Handicapped Driver Training Consultant for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Richard was often heard saying, “Giving mobility to physically disabled persons and having them obtain the freedom to drive is more fulfilling to me than a paycheck.” After “retirement” Richard continue his work at Easter Seals CT/RI and Gaylord Hospital of Rehabilitation. Richard was heavily involved with the Democratic Party for the State of Connecticut. In keeping tradition, Richard and Erin would attend the Jackson, Jefferson, Bailey Dinner for many years. He was recognized by Governors Meskill, Grasso, and O’Neil for his work with the State of Connecticut Handicapped Driver Training Program. He was also awarded the Nutmeg Award by Governor William O’Neil. Richard wasn’t just Dad or Grampy he was Dick McCall; the man who would help anyone he called family and friends, the man you could always count on, and the man with a kind, gentle heart with a sense of humor that all enjoyed. He was especially proud of his grandsons Connor and Ryan whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his daughter Erin McCall of Avon; grandsons Connor and Ryan Goldie; his brother, Donald P. McCall (Cynthia) of Rocky Hill; brothers-in-law John F. Silver and Francis Silver; sister-in-law Betty Ann Colon; as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and wonderful family and friends. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his brother Harold F. McCall, Jr., sister Joan M. Taylor, and brother-in-law Robert Silver. His family will receive friends on Thursday, August 23, 2019, from 4-8PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 24, 2019 at 10AM at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road, Avon. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Ann Cemetery.
