Verizon and Cisco Partner for 5G Stadium Development

Verizon and Cisco announced Wednesday that the two tech giants are collaborating on 5G and mobile edge computing (MEC) solutions to help sports venues with the safety, security and experience of fans.

The partnership will combine the network speed of Verizon 5G with the ultra-low latency of its 5G Edge MEC technology, as well as Cisco DNA Spaces, for secure location analytics and other Cisco connected stadium tools.

Among the potential use cases are the estimation of wait times at entry gates, restrooms and concession stands, the identification of high crowd density areas, and the real-time updates of digital signage to alleviate bottlenecks and help maintain social distancing.

Verizon has promoted its new 5G network through recent distribution partnerships with the NHL as well as esports teams Dignitas and FaZe Clan. Cisco has recently completed projects with golf’s U.S. Open and MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers.
