Rey Mysterio announced Saturday he will compete at New Japan Pro-Wrestling's Strong Style Evolved show in Long Beach, California, on March 25.

As seen in the following video courtesy of New Japan Pro-Wrestling World, Mysterio appeared on the screen at New Beginning in Osaka, Japan, on Saturday and called out Jushin "Thunder" Liger:

According to Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats, Liger accepted the challenge.

Mysterio is a big get for New Japan in its continued efforts to gain popularity in the United States.

The 43-year-old veteran is a San Diego native, and his presence at Strong Style Evolved figures to generate even more buzz surrounding the show.

Mysterio and Liger only have one documented singles match against each other, and it took place at WCW Starrcade in 1996. They are widely considered two of the greatest cruiserweights of all time, and their match is likely to be one of New Japan's featured attractions in Long Beach.

After a successful stint in Lucha Underground, Mysterio returned to WWE on Jan. 28 as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble match. He entered at No. 27 and was one of the final five Superstars remaining. He also received a hugely positive reaction from the crowd.

Mysterio would undoubtedly be an asset to WWE either in the cruiserweight division or as part of the regular roster, but his involvement in Strong Style Evolved likely means a full-time return to WWE will be delayed at the very least.
