Richard Volney Townsend, age 86, of Saluda, formerly of Auburn, N.Y., died Friday, September 27, 2002, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond V. Townsend, and a granddaughter, Cara Renee Chapin. He is survived by his wife, Mildred M. Townsend; nine children, Janet Chapin and her husband, David, of Gloucester, Nancy Scott and her husband, Gordon, of Houston, Texas, Susan Hinds and her husband, Vince, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Joann Page and her husband, James, of Trenton, Ga., Thomas Townsend and his wife, Susan, of Waverly, Kevin Townsend of White Stone, Christopher Townsend of Northfield, Minn., James Townsend and his wife, Judy, of Racine, Wis., and Sara Lawson and her husband, Stanley, of Hartfield; one sister, Martha Cooke of Lynchburg; and 18 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church, Saluda. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda.
