AICPA seeks applicants for 2021-22 student scholarships

The American Institute of CPAs has opened applications for more than $125,000 in scholarships for both CPA Exam candidates and grants for college accounting students.

Two scholarships will be offered: the CPA Exam Scholarship and the COVID-19 Student Hardship Grant. Scholarships are funded by the AICPA Foundation, which aims to financially support the next generation of CPAs.

The CPA Exam Scholarship offers $1,500 to at least 50 AICPA Student Affiliate members or AICPA CPA Exam Candidate Affiliate members in the U.S. The scholarship will reimburse CPA Exam-related fees, in addition to exam prep courses.

The CPA Exam Scholarship is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are pursuing CPA licensure and who have demonstrated a financial need. Applicants must provide a copy of a Notice to Schedule for at least one section of the CPA Exam and a copy of the receipt for payment of the exam application fees.

“Passing the Exam and becoming a licensed CPA opens the door to a world of career possibilities,” said Mike Decker, vice president of CPA Examination and Pipeline at the AICPA & CIMA, in a statement. “This scholarship will help qualified candidates cover some of the costs of this investment in their career.”

The COVID-19 Student Hardship Grant will provide $2,000 to help cover education-related expenses for up to 25 students who have experienced professional hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 Student Hardship Grants are open to AICPA Student Affiliate members pursuing an undergraduate or graduate-level accounting degree or accounting-related major. Students must be enrolled full-time in an accredited business and/or accounting program for the 2021-2022 academic school year and have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of college coursework, with at least six hours in accounting. Applicants must provide a student copy of their college transcript(s), resume, documentation of financial hardship, and a statement on how the hardship affected their future studies of CPA licensure.

“As the U.S. continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans, including college students, have had their financial situations negatively impacted. We know many students are not able to cover the full cost of their education,” said AICPA Foundation president Ernie Almonte in a statement. “The AICPA Foundation believes it’s important to provide these students with financial assistance to aid them in finishing their education and starting their careers in the profession.”

Applications for the two awards will be accepted through Sept. 15, 2021. More information is available on ThisWayToCPA's site here.
