California cracks down on restaurants, bars not following COVID-19 restrictions

THEY HAD NOT EXPECTED THE TO TAKE IMMEDIATE EFFECT WE CAN GET GOING T BE NEXT DAY LIKE STARTING NEXT DAY IF THERE ARE CLEAR VIOLATIONS, THE THEY’LL WRITE A CITATION THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL SAYING TONIGHT AGENTS ARE CONTINUING TO ENFORCE PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDANCE, MOST OF THOSE WERE FOR VIOLATION OF THE HEALTH ORDERS FOR THINGS LIKE NO FACE COVERINGS ON ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE SERVERS OR BARTENDERS OR PEOPLE WHO ARE SERVING THE ALCOHOL TO THE PATRONS THE VAST MAJORITY OF BUSINESS IS LICENSED WITH ABC AND CALIFORNIA APPEAR TO BE FOLLOWING STATE GUIDELINES ABC ISSUING JUST 88 CITATIONS OUT OF 13,000 INVESTIGATIONS IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS ALONE. THE CITATION IS ACTUALL A CRIMINAL MISDEMEANOR CITATION. THAT’S BASICALLY GIVEN TO THE MANAGER OR THE OWNER THAT BUSINESS WHEN THE AGENTS VISIT. WE ASKED ABC FOR NAMES AND LOCATIONS OF LOCAL BUSINESSES FOUND BREAKING PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR THE MONTH OF JULY ALONE. WE AND OVER A DOZEN RESTAURANTS AND BARS FROM SACRAMENTO TO STOCKTON IN VIOLATION. THERE A HEALTH ORDERS IN EFFECT, AND THE HEALTH ORDERS ARE TO ADDRESS THIS DEADLY VIRUS ABC IS STILL REVIEWING THE VIOLATIONS AND WE’LL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO PURSUE DISCIPLINARY ACTION. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, or ABC, is actively issuing citations to restaurants and bars that are not following state novel coronavirus public health orders. KCRA 3 Investigates learned on Tuesday a handful of businesses in the Sacramento area were cited. Workers at El Burrito Taqueria in Sacramento said they never expected to be cited. Staff said an undercover officer paid them a visit on the very same day Gov. Gavin Newsom reissued public health orders requiring restaurants to close all indoor operations. The staff said they had not expected the order to take immediate effect."We thought it was starting the next day," explained employee Maria Ruiz, adding more advance notice would have been helpful. El Burrito Taqueria swiftly changed operations to meet the state's public health guidelines by shutting down their indoor operations, requiring staff to wear protective equipment, and serving customers outdoors or by take-out only. "If there are clear violations, will write a citation," said John Carr, a spokesperson with the ABC.KCRA 3 learned the vast majority of businesses licensed with ABC in California appeared to be following state guidelines. The state issued just 88 citations out of 13,000 investigations in the last two weeks alone. Most violations were for breaking public health guidelines, such as serving customers indoors or staff that did not wear face masks. "The citation is a criminal misdemeanor citation that is given to the manager or owner of the business when agents visit," Carr explained.KCRA 3 asked ABC for names and locations of local businesses found breaking public health guidelines. For the month of July alone, KCRA 3 found over a dozen restaurants and bars, from Sacramento to Stockton, in violation."There are health orders in effect and the health orders are to address the deadly virus," Carr said. ABC is still reviewing the violations and will decide whether to pursue disciplinary action.
