Paphos to award gold key to city to Polish President

A ceremony will be held at Paphos town hall this Friday to honour Polish President, Andrzej Duda. Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos will present him with a symbolic gold key to the city.

“We are honoured to welcome President Duda to Paphos as part of his visit to Cyprus, and felt the necessity to recognise and celebrate the ties between our two countries,” a municipality spokesperson told the Cyprus Mail. “Poland and Cyprus share the same universal values. As members of the European Union, our positions on cultural issues are often very similar,” he said.

He added that Polish archaeological activity of the University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian University of Kraków in Paphos has made an exceptional contribution to the discovery, scientific study, preservation and promotion of the town’s antiquities, at the same time having a significant impact on untangling the past of the island.

“The Polish archaeological mission of both universities signifies Poland’s great interest in retaining and enhancing its scientific ties with Cyprus,” the spokesperson said.

During his visit to Paphos, the President of Poland will visit the renowned mosaics and the Ancient Agora that form part of the archaeological park where the Polish archaeological mission carried out numerous excavations.
