ONTONAGON — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves set two major program milestones Friday in a 50-0 shutout win over Ontonagon in a Great Lakes Eight West Division contest.

A year after going winless, the Wolves (3-4) set a program-record for wins in a season by picking up their third victory in a game they also earned their first shutout in school history.

“It’s amazing the progess we’re showing from last year to this year,” Wolves’ coach Jim Belec said. “Each year is a stepping stone. We took our bumps like our last two opponents (Stephenson and Ontonagon), so after the game I just told them you’ll get there. We took our bumps in the beginning and look at us now. We’re winning games. It’s pretty neat.”

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead when the Gladiators fumbled on their first play and Brett LaFord turned the turnover into points on a 20-yard touchdown run. Markus Damaschke added a 10-yard TD run before quarterback Max Baumler hooked up with Jerry Lee LaFord from 10 yards out to make it 24-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Another 35-yard TD run by Brett LaFord and a 59-yard pass from Baumler to Jacob Blahnik made it 36-0 at the half.

“Brett LaFord was just Brett LaFord,” Belec said. “It’s hard to think of what it’s going to be like next year when he’s not here. It’s nice that Markus gave us some yards.”

The Wolves extended their lead on a 47-yard score by LaFord in the third quarter. Baumler was picked off on the next possession, but the Wolves’ defense responded with a safety to make it 44-0. C-N capped the scoring on a 30-yard pass from Baumler to Blahnik in the fourth quarter.

“After getting a win last week (36-6 over Stephenson), it was nice to be able to stay in the win column,” Belec said. “We don’t get a chance to win many of them, so to be able to blow a team out was pretty nice.”

Brett LaFord rushed 17 times for 218 yards and three TDs. Damaschke carried 10 times for 85 yards and a score, and Baumler threw three TD passes. Blahnik caught two of them. Jacob Thoney chipped in with two sacks and two tackles for loss, and Peyton Imhoff intercepted a pass. C-N forced four turnovers as a team.

“It was just a dominant effort by our defense,” Belec said. “Even the subs stepped up and made plays. Hopefully, these (last) two games give the guys some confidence going forward.”

The Wolves visit arch-rival North Central Friday.
