4A No. 10 Dubuque Hempstead 38, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 20
The good news was Cedar Rapids Kennedy got to play a football game Friday night after two excruciating weeks off because of COVID-19.
The bad news was the game itself.
Dubuque Hempstead pretty much did what it wanted when it wanted offensively and beat the Cougars, 38-20, at Dalzell Field. The Mustangs (4-1) entered The Gazette's Class 4A poll this week at No. 10 and looked even better than that here, piling up 507 yards with a balanced spread attack that Kennedy (1-2) had no answers for.
'They're the best team on this side of the state, and we knew that going in,' said Kennedy Coach Brian White.

2A No. 2 Williamsburg 24, Mid-Prairie 8
Riley Holt picked up a botched punt snap and ran it 15 yards for a touchdown in the first half, then added a late 86-yard run to help second-ranked Williamsburg defeat Mid-Prairie, 24-8, in a Class 2A District 7 football game at Bob Murphy Stadium.
The Raiders improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the district.
'This is a really fun team to coach,' Williamsburg Coach Curt Ritchie said. 'They're a little undersized, but they're gritty and they play hard.'
Williamsburg held Mid-Prairie running back Kaden Reinier to 51 rushing yards. He had averaged 200 per game through the first three contests.

2A No. 7 Mount Vernon 36, Union Community 0
The start may have lulled Mount Vernon into a false sense of security.
Two impressive scoring drives to start the game had the Mustangs, ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, up 15-0 after less than seven minutes of play. At that point, the offense bogged down, but the defense stood tall, stopping visiting Union three times inside the 20 in the second quarter.
Those defensive stands provided momentum for the hosts as they went on to get the offense going in the second half en route to a 36-0 District 6 win over Friday night at Ash Park.

2A No. 9 Solon 28, Vinton-Shellsburg 6
Homecoming at Solon went off without a hitch Friday night, as the Spartans defeated their Class 2A District 6 foes from Vinton-Shellsburg, 28-6.
'The plan coming into the game, and our approach all year really, has been to stop the run,' said Solon first-year coach Lucas Stanton. 'Vinton is a good team and they do a lot of good things, including running the ball.
Vikings quarterback Brooks Erickson utilized his mobility while rushing 14 times for 26 yards to go with his five tailbacks' 15 carries for another 44 yards on the ground.
'It was a good challenge for us," Stanton said. We did some good things, but weren't always happy with how we were able to finish some drives. We felt we left a lot of points out there, too.'
The reason Stanton and the Spartans felt that way was because they committed 10 penalties for 114 yards, slowing several possible scoring opportunities.
Solon did get back-to-back touchdown scampers from sophomore signal-caller Blake Timmons (4-of-9 with 53 yards through the air to go with 14 rushes for 84 yards) in the second quarter to give the Spartans a 14-3 advantage after the Vikings senior kicker Jesse Pladsen converted a 41-yard field goal to start the scoring. Pladsen added a 32-yarder 1:25 before halftime.
Timmons added touchdown passes of 31 yards to Jackson Ryan (13 carries for 96 yards) and 14 yards to Carson Miller.

A No. 2 Iowa City Regina 56, A No. 10 Lisbon 26
Iowa City Regina football coach Marv Cook described Theo Kolie as the total package.
He has witnessed the senior running back make strides, starting at the end of last year. Kolie's progress led to some extremely big gains and proof that the Regals have another big weapon to complement passing tandem Ashton Cook and Alex Wick.
'He's been there all season,' Cook said of Kolie. 'All last season he was coming on. Every single day he gets better and better.'
Kolie contributed to second-ranked Regina's offensive outburst Friday night, scoring four touchdowns and amassing 300 total yards in a 56-26 victory over No. 10 Lisbon in a Class A District 6 football game at Regina.

A No. 6 Edgewood-Colesburg 42, North Linn 28
The first half wasn't pretty.
But No. 6 Edgewood-Colesburg, led by Parker Rochford's five passing touchdowns, rallied back from a 15-point halftime deficit to defeat North Linn, 42-28, Friday night at Lynx Field.
After managing just two first downs, 36 yards of total offense and seven points in the first half, the Vikings exploded for 35 second-half points. The Vikings were plagued by penalties, committing 12 for 120 yards, but were able to overcome them with an explosive passing attack.
Rochford completed 14 of 26 for 252 yards.

Ed-Co rallies from a 22-0 deficit to top North Linn on the road and stay undefeated
Alburnett 14, East Buchanan 0
It's been a year since the bell chimed at Alburnett, but it was ringing in the north end zone at night's end.
Alburnett snuffed out a few deep drives and mustered just enough offense to win a 14-0 slugfest over East Buchanan on Friday night.
'It's crazy,' Alburnett quarterback Hunter Caves said. 'It's been a year since we got a win on this field, since we've rung the bell. It's a good feeling. Good to get a win. East Buchanan has a good team but we came out and played a little bit harder.'
The Pirates (2-2, 1-1) ensured it would be a happy homecoming on the night's opening possession. Starting at their own 40, the Pirates moved down the field on the strength of an efficient Caves and three East Buchanan penalties. Caves connected on 3 of 4 passes and the Pirates drew a pass interference flag on fourth-and-6.
Shane Neighbor scored from 2 yards out as Alburnett seized the 7-0 lead with 8:09 to play in the first quarter.
But the defenses ruled the night. The Buccaneers (1-4, 0-3) could not get their ground attack going and the Pirates had trouble sustaining drives. Alburnett did move to the Buccaneers' 9 on a fourth-down bootleg run from Caves. The drive fizzled as Noah Mackey's 23-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.
East Buchanan flirted with the end zone twice. With the half coming to a close, the Buccaneers came alive with their two-minute offense. East Buchanan QB TJ Lau put East Buchanan at the Pirates 8 with 25 seconds left. Four straight plays failed to gain any traction.
The Buccaneers used a clock-consuming drive to get inside the Pirates' 10-yard-line, but a fourth-and-goal pass was broken up.
'We've got one of the best defenses out here. Definitely in (Class A) for sure,' Caves said. 'That's when we get hyped up the most. We know it's all on the line. We just keep coming harder.'
After that defensive stand, the Pirates took control. Two runs from Caves netted 37 yards. Reed Stallman plunged in from the 3 to make it 14-0.
Gavin Soukup picked off Lau and took it to the East Buchanan 10 with 5:11 remaining to seal it.

Xavier scored 21 points off four Oskaloosa turnovers.

Tyler Luensman caught seven of those passes for 181 yards and two scores, and Caleb Sauser also had two touchdown receptions for the 4-0, eighth-ranked Panthers. Justin Recker's leaping, one-handed grab in the end zone on a 35-yard play with 1.9 seconds left in the half gave the Panthers a 17-0 lead at the break.
Tipton dropped to 1-3.

Busy Saturday in Cedar Rapids Metro
This week isn't all about Friday night lights in Cedar Rapids and Marion. Three games have been scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Cedar Rapids Washington (3-1) will welcome 3A No. 6 Davenport Assumption (4-0) to Kingston Stadium at 1:15 p.m. The Knights were scheduled to play 3A No. 10 North Scott, which is not holding in-person classes this week due to COVID-19. The Warriors' lost their game at Iowa City Liberty, which is set to return to the field next week as the school district implements a hybrid learning plan.
Marion (2-1, 1-1) kicks off with Dubuque Wahlert (2-1, 1-0) at 2:30 p.m. in a Class 3A District 4 game. The Indians are playing Saturday afternoon home games at Linn-Mar Stadium this year because Thomas Park Field was damaged by the Aug. 10 derecho.
And after a two-week quarantine, Linn-Mar (0-2) returns to the field at 3:15 p.m. with a game at Cedar Rapids Prairie (1-2).
