At-home fitness equipment: What’s selling during the coronavirus shutdown? Kettlebells

Have you noticed new dumbbells, weight plates or kettlebells at home? According to a study of eBay sales, search volumes and data from an online fitness provider, people confined by the coronavirus pandemic are fired up about having exercise equipment close at hand.

Pull-up bars have been installed over doorways. Underused parts of the home or garage have been converted to mini fitness centers.

Stacked in weight racks next to floor mats and benches are medicine balls and barbells. Also on the home scene: Strength training Smith Machines and push-up stands, according to eBay’s survey.

Since stay-at-home orders to reduce the spread of the coronavirus were issued and gyms temporarily closed their doors, not only has the sale of personal fitness equipment exploded but online fitness sessions have replaced face-to-face training.

Ollie Bailey, CEO of fitness session bookers Gymcatch, reports an increase of 2000% in online bookings since the lockdown was introduced compared to the same period in 2019.

"It’s an incredible increase and one that proves the world is staying on top of health,” Bailey said in a news release.

The Gymcatch app, which makes it easier for fitness providers to receive digital payments, found the most popular classes among 17,000 bookings during the first four weeks of lockdown were pilates, digital personal training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and Boogie Bounce, which involves a trampoline.
