Over the years, Randall Road has experienced heavy congestion, with traffic volumes higher than it was designed to carry, county transportation officials have previously said.

"In addition, the existing road cannot accommodate the traffic to sustain the economic viability and regional mobility in the Algonquin/Crystal Lake/Lake in the Hills area," reads a portion from the county's project overview.

The road project will ultimately widen Randall Road to six lanes, from Harnish Drive in Algonquin to north to Polaris Drive in Lake in the Hills. It will also include additional turn lanes at the intersection of Randall and Algonquin roads.

The $45 million project is funded partially through federal funds with the remaining 42 percent covered by McHenry County.
