CSS Neuse Civil War Center introduces new teacher institute
Teachers now have the opportunity to bring more eastern Carolina history into the classroom.
Lenoir County history teachers swapped places with their students for a day to learn from the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center during their first ever Teacher Institute.
The teachers gathered information on the Civil War era through hands on demonstrations like building ships, activities they can then use to teach their own students.
Middle school history teacher Chadwick Stokes says, "All these hands on activities we hope that they can take back to their classrooms and demonstrate for their kids now that they've had the opportunity to do it themselves."
Stokes says they were inspired by other historic sites like George Washington's Mount Vernon that bring in teachers across the country to their institutes.
