Title IX: Athletes can play amid sexual misconduct inquiries

New federal regulations released Friday will prevent colleges and coaches from suspending athletes accused of sexual misconduct while school officials investigate complaints against them. The due process provision is one of several outlined in the U.S. Department of Education's final version of regulations governing how K-12 schools, colleges and universities respond to complaints of sexual harassment and violence under Title IX. The regulations, a draft version of which the Biden administration proposed in June 2022, are scheduled to go into effect Aug. 1. Friday's release did not include provisions regarding the eligibility of transgender athletes, which had been included in an earlier Department of Education proposal. Officials separated that issue from the broader Title IX rules and those regulations are not expected until after November's presidential election. When asked during a call with reporters Thursday whether the delay was politically motivated, a...

Utah, Florida deny Oklahoma's bid for NCAA gymnastics 3-peat

FORT WORTH, Texas -- For the first time since 2012, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team will not be competing in the NCAA championship meet. The two-time defending champion Sooners, who spent the entirety of the season ranked No. 1, did not advance to Saturday's final after finishing third during Thursday's second semifinal session at Dickies Arena.  The Sooners finished with a final score of 196.6625. Utah won the session with a score of 197.9375 followed by Florida (197.8750). They will be joined in Saturday's championship by LSU (198.1125) and California (197.7125), who were victorious in the first semifinal Thursday. The favorites to win their seventh NCAA championship, the Sooners got off to an uncharacteristic nervy start during their first rotation on vault as three gymnasts had major landing errors. Needing to count two of those scores (as the lowest score is dropped), Oklahoma recorded a 48.3250 -- more than a full point below its average on the event this season and...

Ex-Louisville coach Kenny Payne rejoins John Calipari at Arkansas

After their successful stint together at Kentucky, new Arkansas coach John Calipari has reunited with Kenny Payne, the former Louisville head coach. Payne, who was fired by Louisville last month, will serve as associate head coach on Calipari's staff in Fayetteville, it was announced Thursday. From 2010 to 2020, Payne was an assistant and associate head coach during Calipari's most successful years at Kentucky. Payne was noted for his work with some of the notable big men who anchored the program, including NBA All-Stars Anthony Davis, Karl-Anthony Towns and Bam Adebayo. With Payne on staff, Calipari won his lone national championship in 2012 and participated in a streak of four Final Four appearances in five seasons. Former players would sometimes return to Lexington during the NBA offseason to work with Payne, who left Kentucky in 2020 for a role as an assistant with the New York Knicks. Calipari had his worst...

Arizona State QB Jaden Rashada to enter transfer portal

Arizona State freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada is set to enter the transfer portal, his agent Henry Organ of Disruptive Sports told ESPN on Thursday. Rashada appeared in three games for the Sun Devils last fall, passing for 485 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. ESPN's No. 31 overall recruit in the 2023 class initially signed with Florida but was released from his national letter of intent after a $13 million name, image and likeness agreement fell through with Florida's Gator Collective. The Pittsburg, California, native eventually signed with Arizona State, where his father, Harlen, played defensive back from 1992 to 1994. Jaden Rashada posted a message to social media thanking his Arizona State teammates and coaches and saying that he is "seeking the best fit for my career." Rashada has four years of eligibility left and will become one of the top players available in the spring transfer cycle, which opened Tuesday and lasts through...

Kerr: 'A lot of value' in keeping Warriors' Big 3 together

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the past several years, the Golden State Warriors have consistently been asked how much longer they can keep their dynasty together. Their title in 2022 bought them a year. But, following last season's second-round exit and Draymond Green's free agency, the question resurfaced. And now, after getting run off the floor and out of the postseason by the Sacramento Kings and with  Klay Thompson heading into unrestricted free agency, the question is even louder. The hope within the organization is that the core of Thompson, Green and Stephen Curry can remain intact. But there's no hiding from the fact that it's easier said than done. "It's rarely a storybook," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said at his exit interview Thursday. "Even the '96 or '98 Bulls, you know, the team was broken up and we won the championship in our last year but there was a documentary about what a disaster the whole thing was. It's impossible for this...

LeBron James: 'Too much emphasis' on Lakers-Nuggets as rematch

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- While history shows that the Denver Nuggets swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference finals en route to the championship in 2023 and the Lakers beat the Nuggets in the conference finals on their way to the title in 2020, LeBron James says whatever happened in the past has no bearing on the present playoff series about to begin. "I think you're putting a little bit too much emphasis on it," James said after practice Thursday when asked about the rematch factor for the two teams. "This is our first-round matchup. I mean, we're looking forward to the postseason. But I haven't been, like, looking forward to the rematch. The game is played how it's being played, and this is the matchup. So we're looking forward to that challenge." It doesn't serve the Lakers any good to reflect on how their recent performances have gone against Denver. The Nuggets have won the past eight straight, including last year's playoffs. "It shouldn't...

MLB suspends Pirates' Aroldis Chapman for 'inappropriate actions'

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Aroldis Chapman has been suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount for "inappropriate actions" during Monday's game against the New York Mets, MLB announced Thursday. Unless he appeals, Chapman is scheduled to start the suspension Friday, when the Pirates host the Boston Red Sox. Chapman was ejected by plate umpire Edwin Moscoso after giving up a two-run double in the eighth inning of Monday's loss to the Mets. "He evidently said something that the umpire did not like," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after Monday's game.

NFL finds 'insufficient evidence' to punish Ravens' Zay Flowers

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers will not be disciplined by the NFL after being involved in a domestic violence investigation earlier this year, the league said in a statement Thursday. "Following a review, the NFL concluded there was insufficient evidence to support a finding that Zay Flowers engaged in any activity that violated the NFL's personal conduct policy," the league said in a statement. "There will be no action taken by the league and Flowers remains eligible to participate in all team activities." This decision comes two months after Baltimore County Police suspended a domestic violence investigation involving Flowers, who was never charged. The alleged incident occurred Jan. 16 in Owings Mills, Maryland. According to a police report, a woman said she was involved in a "violent" domestic incident with an NFL player. She told police the player's brother pulled a gun on her. Flowers, 23, set Ravens rookie records last season...

Jack Leiter struggles in MLB debut as Rangers hold off Tigers

The Texas Rangers overcame a rough major league debut from Jack Leiter to hold off the Detroit Tigers in the finale of their four-game series Thursday. Leiter, the No. 2 overall draft selection in 2021 and the son of former big-league-left-hander Al Leiter, struck out two in a scoreless first inning but struggled after that. The hard-throwing right-hander lasted just 3⅔ innings, allowing seven runs and eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. "He was all right," Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had a little trouble hitting his spots in the second inning but he came right back in the third and got two quick outs in the fourth before he ran into trouble." Leiter said it was "a surreal experience" to make his major league debut. "It's something you dream about since you were a little kid. Being around the game always, it's a special day. I know I'm better and I need to be better, and I will be better. And that's kind of the frustration is some...

Reed Sheppard enters NBA draft, leaves Kentucky after 1 season

Kentucky freshman guard Reed Sheppard will enter the 2024 NBA draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility, he told ESPN on Thursday. "I'm going all-in," Sheppard said. "The opportunity I have is great. I've gotten really good feedback showing where I can be in the draft. I had an unbelievable year at Kentucky. It was such a fun year. It's not easy leaving the fans and the school I dreamed of playing at. I need to do what's best for me, and that's heading to the NBA." Sheppard, the No. 7 prospect in ESPN's NBA draft projections, was named the SEC freshman of the year and second-team all-conference after averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game and shooting 52.1% from 3. No first-round pick from college has shot over 50% from 3 on similar volume since Glen Rice at Michigan in 1988-89. "My teammates and coaches put confidence in me, telling me you need to shoot," Sheppard said. "I was fortunate to be able to get in the gym...

NFL reinstates five players from gambling suspensions

The NFL has reinstated five players who were suspended for the 2023 season for violating the NFL's gambling policy. Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney and four free agents -- defensive end Rashod Berry, wide receiver Quintez Cephus, safety C.J. Moore, and defensive end Demetrius Taylor -- were reinstated. Defensive back Isaiah Rodgers, who also was suspended last year for at least the 2023 season, wasn't reinstated Thursday. His situation remains under review, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday. Both Rodgers and Berry were with the Indianapolis Colts at the time of their suspensions, and both were released by the team last year. Rodgers later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, who hold his rights if he gets reinstated. Cephus and Moore were with the Detroit Lions at the time of their suspensions and both were released by the team. Cephus had 60 catches for 568 yards and four touchdowns...

NHL approves Coyotes sale, relocation to Salt Lake City

The NHL is moving the team now formerly known as the  Arizona Coyotes to Utah to begin play as a new franchise next season, the league announced Thursday. Ryan and Ashley Smith of Smith Entertainment Group bought the team and its existing hockey assets for $1.2 billion from Alex Meruelo, sources told ESPN. Meruelo had owned the Coyotes since buying the franchise for $300 million in 2019, but the league lost patience in his ability to find a long-term arena solution in Arizona and facilitated a sale. The Smiths, who also own the NBA's Utah Jazz, initially built a relationship with commissioner Gary Bettman because they wanted an expansion franchise. However, over the past several months, the conversation changed and Bettman approached the Smiths about becoming a solution for the Coyotes instead. According to Ryan Smith, things pivoted fast. "I mean, if you would've told me at the beginning of the year that this is where we'd be, I'd say you were crazy," he told...

Bills' Josh Allen thanks departed Stefon Diggs for his hard work

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. --  Josh Allen said Thursday that he can't thank Stefon Diggs enough for "for when he came in and how hard he worked and what he taught me along the years." Allen said Diggs "meant a lot" to him since the Bills traded for the star wide receiver in 2020. The quarterback also noted multiple times that the trade opens opportunities for other players to step up. "It's definitely hard to part ways with a guy that's been very instrumental in our success here over the last four years," Allen said. "... Obviously, I wish we can keep everybody. You know, we've made a lot of changes this offseason, lost a lot of veteran leadership, Stef being one of them. I guess that's the nature of the business. And going into Year 7 now, it's just kind of is what it is. I don't get paid to make changes on the team. I get paid to be the best quarterback that I can be and try to lead the guys on this team." Allen also said his lasting memory of Diggs will "be the...

Deion Sanders downplays transfer exodus from Colorado

In the wake of 14 Colorado players entering the transfer portal this week, Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders downplayed the notion that their departures will have a significant impact on the team. "We're good. I trust the recruiting team. I trust our coaches, and please have some faith in me," Sanders said. "We good. We all right. We all right." Sanders said most of the movement in the transfer portal consisted of backups and that he believes it's rare for starters to enter the portal at this stage. "I think we got some [starting-caliber players] coming in from visits pretty soon, maybe even this weekend, but we can attract those type of players," Sanders said. "I don't think we're losing those type of players, and if we do, we're good. We're good. We're making a big deal out of nothing." Former five-star cornerback Cormani McClain, who had a tumultuous first season at Colorado, and running back Alton McCaskill, who was the AAC Rookie of the Year in 2021,...

Cavinder twins returning to Miami for final season

Haley and Hanna Cavinder are returning to Miami for their fifth and final season of collegiate eligibility, they announced on social media this week. The twins helped Miami in 2023 reach its first-ever Elite Eight in their first season there after spending three years at Fresno State. They are among the biggest beneficiaries of name, image and likeness policies, capitalizing on their pandemic-era explosion in fame on TikTok to build an extensive NIL portfolio. Both Cavinders originally intended to step away from basketball following their senior year and pursue a new chapter of their lives, including opportunities with WWE, but Haley announced in Nov. 2023 she had committed to play at TCU beginning in the 2024-25 season. On Wednesday, Hanna posted that she would be returning to basketball and finish her career at Miami, and then on Thursday Haley announced she'd be joining forces with her twin. Former LSU star Hailey Van Lith transferring to TCU, per reports

Former LSU star Hailey Van Lith will transfer to TCU for the 2024-25 season, according to multiple reports. Van Lith is joining the Horned Frogs for her final season of college eligibility after averaging 11.6 points and 3.6 assists per game in her only season with the Tigers. The 5-foot-7 guard -- a two-time first-team All-ACC selection during her three years at Louisville -- was one of LSU's big-name transfers that catapulted the defending champion Tigers into the conversation as the No. 1 preseason team in the country and helped them reach another Elite Eight. After guiding the Cardinals to the Final Four in 2022, Van Lith went to Baton Rouge and took on a less prominent role offensively, averaging 9.9 field goal attempts per game, the second-lowest mark of her career. As the primary scorer playing off the ball at Louisville, she posted a career-best 19.7 points per game as a junior. "A lot of people have a lot to say about how this year went...

Red Sox's Rafael Devers to get MRI; Tyler O'Neill to IL

The Boston Red Sox continue to battle injury woes, with third baseman Rafael Devers scheduled to have an MRI on his left knee and outfielder Tyler O'Neill going on the injury list after the two collided during Monday's game. Devers, a two-time All-Star, left Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians with knee discomfort and served as designated hitter during Wednesday's game, going hitless in four at-bats with three strikeouts. O'Neill suffered a cut on his forehead that required eight stitches to close after his collision with Devers on Monday. He cleared concussion protocol but hadn't played since. The move to the seven-day IL is retroactive to Tuesday. Devers is batting just .188 with 2 homers and 5 RBIs through 13 games this season. Pablo Reyes started at third base and batted seventh in Thursday's matinee vs. the Guardians at Fenway Park. In a related move, the Red Sox activated outfielder Rob Refsnyder...

Geno Auriemma says one-and-done rule could 'ruin' women's college basketball

A potential one-and-done rule in women's college basketball could "ruin the game," according to UConn coach Geno Auriemma. "It depends whether you want the game to grow or you want to kill it," Auriemma said Thursday during an interview on ESPN Radio's "UnSportsmanLike." "If you want to kill it, then let the kids leave after freshman year," Auriemma said. "On the men's side, it's become transactional. Everybody's a free agent. Everybody's a mercenary. It's not the kids' fault. ... To me, what helped the women's game grow is the people in Iowa got to grow up with Caitlin Clark. The people of Connecticut got to grow up with all of my great players. There's something to be said for that." Current WNBA rules stipulate that players are eligible to be selected in the WNBA draft upon graduating from college -- or being within three months of doing so -- or in the calendar year that they turn 22. For example, 2021 national player of the year Paige Bueckers,...

Eliot Wolf: Patriots open to trading No. 3 pick but like QBs, too

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf said Thursday that the team is "open for business" to trade the No. 3 pick in next week's 2024 NFL draft but would be comfortable staying put and selecting a quarterback from what he called a "unique" class. Wolf described trade discussions with other teams as "ongoing" while adding: "We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft. We're a draft-and-develop team; the more picks we have, the better." Wolf, who has final personnel say in his first year of an increased role with the franchise, acknowledged that the Patriots have yet to receive a trade offer that would motivate them to deal the No. 3 pick. The Patriots enter next week's draft with eight total selections, headlined by the No. 3 pick and selections at the top of the second (No. 34) and third (68) rounds. They have single picks in Rounds 4, 5 and 7 and two picks in Round 6. Wolf, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and the...

Virginia law allows schools to pay athletes for NIL

Schools in Virginia will be able to directly pay athletes via name, image and likeness deals thanks to a state law signed Thursday morning, marking another significant step in the professionalization of college sports. The new law, which is scheduled to take effect July 1, is the first in any state to make it illegal for the NCAA to punish a school for compensating athletes for their NIL rights. Current NCAA rules prohibit schools from signing NIL deals with their own players. The law could either give Virginia schools a significant recruiting advantage or provide a catalyst for similar changes elsewhere. "If this law gets us closer to a federal or a national solution for college athletics then it will be more than worthwhile," University of Virginia athletic director Carla Williams said. "Until then, we have an obligation to ensure we maintain an elite athletics program at UVA." Administrators from the University of Virginia took a leading role in crafting the legislation with...

Sources: Heat's Jimmy Butler expected to miss several weeks

Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a right MCL injury suffered in Wednesday's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Butler was hurt on the final play of the first quarter in Philadelphia. He remained in the game but scored a total of 12 points the rest of the way on 3-for-14 shooting, as Miami's offense dried up after taking a 12-point halftime lead, allowing Philadelphia to come from behind and close a 105-104 victory. The Heat will host the Chicago Bulls on Friday night, with the winner securing the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and a first-round playoff series matchup against the Boston Celtics. The Heat officially ruled Butler out for the Bulls game Thursday afternoon. Also ruled out was point guard Terry Rozier, who continues to deal with a strained neck.  After leaking out for a potential fast-break layup in the first quarter, Butler tried to fake...

Sources: NFL officiating chief set for new role in restructure

NFL officiating chief Walt Anderson is stepping aside amid a larger reorganization of the league's officiating department, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. Anderson, who retired as a referee in 2019, initially joined the officiating department as its senior vice president of training and development. Under the initial vision, he was to work alongside two other executives -- Perry Fewell and Al Riveron -- to lead certain segments of the department. Ultimately, however, Anderson unofficially ascended to the top leadership position. Riveron left his full-time role in 2021, while Fewell is expected to continue in his role. Anderson is expected to remain with the league in some capacity, and his job shift will eliminate the nepotism rules that prevented the NFL from hiring his son, Derek, as an official last year. The NFL has not confirmed Anderson's decision or named a replacement. Sources have said over the past year that the league favors having former coaches, such as Fewell,...

Sixers outduel Heat down stretch to clinch No. 7 seed in East

PHILADELPHIA -- Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers have dealt with their fair share of postseason disappointments. And for much of Wednesday night's Eastern Conference play-in tournament game against the Miami Heat, it looked like they would have another one on their hands. This time, however, things were different. Nicolas Batum hit six 3-pointers, including five in the second half, and scored 20 points, and Embiid, after struggling for most of the game, scored 11 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the Sixers overcome a double-digit halftime deficit and win 105-104. Philadelphia secured the seventh seed and a date with the  New York Knicks on Saturday night, while the Heat will face the Chicago Bulls on Friday for the eighth seed and a first-round meeting with the East-leading  Boston Celtics. "It means a lot," Embiid said after the game. "Being down a lot ... we stuck together. It shows you that. I don't...

Bulls knock Hawks out of play-in, advance to face Heat

CHICAGO -- After Coby White knocked down a deep 3-pointer to give the Chicago Bulls a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter Wednesday night, a sold-out United Center erupted in a booming cheer. CO-BY! CO-BY! CO-BY! White finished with a career-high 42 points, the second-most by a player in a play-in game ( Jayson Tatum had 50 in 2021) and his first career 40-point game, to lead the Bulls to a 131-116 win over the  Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament. The game will not officially count toward White's career regular-season or career playoff stats, but he didn't want to hear it. "It's on the stat sheet right here," White said with a smile as he pointed to the paper in his hand at a postgame news conference. Leafs' Auston Matthews blanked as quest for 70 goals denied

TAMPA, Fla. --  Auston Matthews came up empty in his bid to become the ninth player in NHL history to score 70 goals in a season Wednesday night in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the regular-season finale. Matthews was denied on all seven first-period shots by 29-year-old rookie goalie Matt Tomkins, then rocketed a shot off the post midway through the second period. Tomkins finished with 34 saves, including 12 on Matthews, in his sixth NHL start. Matthews' 12 shots on goal were tied for his second-most in a game this season. "I wanted it, for sure, but it just wasn't meant to be," said Matthews, who went scoreless on back-to-back nights against the Florida Panthers and Lightning. Heat's Jimmy Butler injures knee in play-in loss, set for MRI

PHILADELPHIA -- The  Heat fear guard Jimmy Butler sustained a possible MCL injury to his right knee during Miami's 105-104 play-in tournament loss to the  76ers on Wednesday night, sources confirmed to ESPN. Butler was hurt on the final play of the first quarter in Philadelphia, when after leaking out for a potential fast-break layup, he tried to fake out Kelly Oubre Jr. to attempt to make a layup, only to have his knee buckle after it appeared Oubre landed on it, causing Butler to fall to the floor in pain. "I fell, he landed and my knee just didn't do well, I guess," said Butler, who said he'll be getting an MRI on his knee Thursday. "I don't know. It's not a good feeling, I can tell you that." Lightning's Nikita Kucherov 5th NHL player with 100 assists

Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov became the fifth player to have a 100-assist season as the Lightning beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-4 on Wednesday night. Kucherov, the NHL's scoring leader with 144 points, scored a first-period goal, then set up Brayden Point's power-play tally with 2:55 left in the second for the historic assist.  "It's a special moment," Kucherov said. "Thanks to my teammates and coaching staff for putting me in position to have success. I'm fortunate to play with great players." The NHL ended up with two players breaking the 100-assist mark in the same season after going 32 seasons without one.  Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid notched his 100th assist this season against the  San Jose Sharks on Monday night, becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to hit triple digits for assists. Juventus are reviewing a decision made by an arbitration court which ordered the club to pay former striker Cristiano Ronaldo around €9.8 million ($10.46m) in owed wages, the Serie A side said on Wednesday. Sarkisian: Bama thoughts fleeting, Texas set for 'epic' run

AUSTIN, Texas -- Steve Sarkisian was still unwrapping Texas' breakthrough 2023 season and at the same time casting an optimistic eye toward the future when he heard the news Jan. 10. Nick Saban, his former boss at Alabama, was retiring after a legendary career that saw him win six national championships in Tuscaloosa, the last one in 2020 with Sarkisian as his offensive coordinator. And, yes, Sarkisian acknowledged Wednesday, the possibility of replacing Saban entered his mind. "Naturally, I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it," Sarkisian told ESPN. "But it took me all of about 60 seconds to say, 'Yeah, I'm not doing that.' I had an awesome two years at Alabama and loved my time under Coach Saban, but ultimately you want to reap what you sow. Curry, Green and Kerr's support 'means a lot' to Klay Thompson

SAN FRANCISCO -- Golden State guard Klay Thompson didn't want to spend too much time thinking about his future during his exit interview on Wednesday, just one day after the Warriors' season came to an abrupt end -- and just one day after he possibly played his final game for the team as he heads into free agency this summer. "Considering it's April 17th, I don't think I have to pivot that quickly," Thompson said. "When is free agency? July 1st? Yeah, I got some time. I got some time." Perhaps Thompson hasn't thought much about who he will be playing for next season, but his teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have thought about what it would be like if Thompson wasn't to return. Following their loss to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament, Curry said he couldn't imagine not playing alongside Thompson, while Green said there isn't "any scenario where Klay leaves and that's the best decision for this team and...

RB J.K. Dobbins plans to sign 1-year deal with Chargers

Former Baltimore Ravens running back  J.K. Dobbins plans to sign a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, per his agency, LAA Sports. The move reunites him with Greg Roman, his former offensive coordinator in Baltimore, as well as his former Ravens backfield mate Gus Edwards. Dobbins was the Ravens' lead back when healthy. He brings a style different from Edwards' that features elusiveness and the ability to catch passes out of the backfield. The Ravens didn't do a ton of throwing to running backs, but in Dobbins' rookie season with Roman, he caught a career-high 18 passes. The Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert relied heavily on former running back Austin Ekeler in the passing offense in the past, and Dobbins could potentially have an impact there.  Dobbins' signing continues a wave of former Ravens who are now Chargers that extends to the front office, from GM Joe Hortiz to tight ends coach Andy Bischoff and tight...

NCAA approves new transfer rule allowing immediate eligibility

A new NCAA transfer rule will allow all undergraduate athletes to transfer and play immediately if they meet specific academic requirements, as the Division I Council on Wednesday approved emergency legislation announced by the NCAA. The decision isn't final until the meetings end on Thursday, and the rule still needs to be formally approved by the NCAA's executive board Monday, but that is expected to be a formality. The rule will provide immediately eligibility to any athletes who have transferred during the 2023-24 academic year, including the football players who entered the transfer portal Tuesday and during this window -- as long as they are academically eligible and meeting progress-towards-degree requirements at their new school. The legislation will not limit the number of times an athlete can transfer -- and there are still two transfer windows -- but they can't transfer midyear and play for a second school in the same season. Although the new rule is tied to academic...

Report: Larry Nassar victims to get $100M from Justice Dept.

The United States Justice Department has agreed to pay around 100 victims of disgraced former Team USA doctor Larry Nassar approximately $100 million for the FBI's failures to properly investigate reports of Nassar's sexual assaults against America's top gymnasts and others, according to a report Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal. If the agreement becomes final, it would push the total amount of settlements in the sprawling legal cases against Nassar to nearly $1 billion. Two attorneys, who between them represent more than 300 of Nassar's victims, would not confirm details of the proposed settlement when reached Wednesday by ESPN. The FBI's failures in the Nassar case are well documented. At a 2021 Senate hearing, FBI director Christopher Wray apologized to survivors of Nassar's abuse, saying it was "inexcusable" that agents "had their own chance to stop this monster back in 2015 and failed." After conducting a five-week internal investigation in the summer of 2015,...

NBA bans Raptors' Jontay Porter for gambling violations

The Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter has been banned from the league after an investigation revealed he had disclosed confidential information to bettors, limited his participation in at least one game while he was with Raptors, and bet on NBA games while playing in the G League. The NBA said in a release announcing Porter's ban that its investigation remains open and that it is sharing information with federal authorities. ESPN reached out to the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI for comment. "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter's blatant violations of our game rules are being met with the most severe punishment," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said while announcing the ban. The NBA launched an investigation into Porter in late March, after sportsbooks noticed irregular betting on the over/under on the reserve center's...

Canadiens exercise two-year option on coach Martin St. Louis

The Canadiens exercised the two-year option on Martin St. Louis' contract Wednesday, keeping the head coach behind the bench in Montreal through the 2026-27 season. St. Louis, 48, guided the Canadiens to a 30-36-16 record this season, resulting in the third consecutive campaign in which the team failed to qualify for the playoffs since reaching the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. He is 75-100-26 since replacing Dominique Ducharme on Feb. 9, 2022. "Every day he proves something else," Canadiens executive vice president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton said of St. Louis. "There's not a day that goes by we're not happy he's at the helm." A Stanley Cup champion as a forward with the Tampa Bay Lightning, St. Louis totaled 1,033 points (391 goals, 642 assists) in 1,134 career games with the Calgary Flames, Lightning and New York Rangers. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

Grant Hill confident in Team USA roster, touts defensive talent

Grant Hill, the managing director of the United States men's basketball team, said the decision to release the team's roster happened to coincide with the United States Olympic Committee's weeklong event in New York City commemorating the Paris Olympics being 100 days away. But, Hill said, the decision also stemmed from another, more important reason: He and the rest of Team USA's leadership already had the group of 12 players they wanted for this year's team in place. "We knew," Hill said on a conference call Wednesday morning. "We didn't necessarily plan it that way, but we knew this was the team that we wanted and we also know that there'll be a lot of interest and a lot of people who will want to be along for this incredible journey we're about to be on. "So if we know, why wait?" It's hard to blame Hill and coach Steve Kerr for being excited about this team. The roster features four NBA MVPs ( LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and reigning...

Fever's Caitlin Clark hailed as savior in hero's welcome to Indy

Caitlin Clark received a hero's welcome to Gainbridge Coliseum on Wednesday morning as the first overall pick in the WNBA draft stepped into her new home arena to a flock of fans and a packed opening news conference. "I'm super happy to be here. Thank you to the Fever, the Pacers. This is a dream come true," said Clark, a two-time National Player of the Year at Iowa and the all-time leading scorer in Division I basketball history. Indianapolis literally painted the town to usher Clark into a stadium adorned with a 20-foot banner, billboards and video displays of her in an already sold-out No. 22 Fever jersey. More than 6,000 people attended a draft party on Monday to celebrate her arrival. Clark delivered an opening statement and paused mid-sentence to identify Tamika Catchings, led the Fever to a WNBA championship in 2012, in an audience that included Clark's parents. "I can't think of a better place for myself to start my career. A place that loves basketball, supports women's...

Lawsuit against Dak Prescott moved to different county

A lawsuit filed in Texas against Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott by a woman accusing him of sexual assault has been moved to Collin County from Dallas County, according to the plaintiff's attorney, Yoel Zehaie. Last week, the suit was dropped in Dallas County after Zehaie submitted a request for a "non-suit without prejudice," which allowed the accuser to refile the suit later. In an email, Zehaie said the move to Collin County was made "for purposes of convenience," since Prescott's initial suit seeking damages was brought in that county. In March, Prescott filed a suit seeking monetary relief in excess of $1 million after receiving a letter in January from attorneys Bethel and Yoel Zehaie on behalf of the woman accusing Prescott of sexually assaulting her in February 2017, according to the suit. The letter stated, "Despite the tragic events, she is willing to forego pursuing criminal charges, along with disclosing this information to the public, in...
