Tech men defeat Penn State, No. 10 Ohio State

Hokies women knock off PSU, fall to No. 15 OSU

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team put together a strong meet as the Hokies defeated Penn State 255-98 and No. 10 Ohio State 182-171 on Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Tech's women's team knocked off the Nittany Lions 190-163, but faltered against No. 15 Ohio State, 225-128. 
 
HOKIES MEN
Tech got the second day of competition off to a strong start as the 200 medley relay team took the top spot with a 1:29.28 from Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock, Blake Manoff and Ian Ho
 
The 1000 freestyle proved to be an exciting event as the aquatic center fire alarm went off in the middle of the first heat of the men's event. After a delay in the action, the Hokies returned to the pool to claim first as Lane Stone swam a 9:14.37. Freshman Brennen Doss added a 9:26.37 third place finish. 
 
In the 50 free, Ho was back in the spotlight, swimming to a first place NCAA B time of 19.88. He was followed by teammate Thomas Hallock in second with a time of 20.34.
 
The Hokies had another one, two finish with Jake Lamparella taking first in 49.38 in the 100 back. His teammate Sam Tornqvist was in second with a time of 49.41.
 
Simon Shi finished second for the Hokies in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.72. Stone followed up with his second top finish of the day as he claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:38.12.
 
Tech had a two, three finish in the 400 IM with Norbert Szabo swimming 3:59.60 and freshman Keith Myburgh recording a time of 3:59.82. 
 
The Hokies wrapped up the swim events with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time off 2:57.86 off of Lamparella, Ho, Hallock and Stone.
 
HOKIES WOMEN
On the women's side, Tech opened with a second place 1:43.11 finish in the 200 medley relay off swims from Emily Meilus, Baillie Cameron, Kayla Purcell and Abby Larson
 
The women's 1000 free was completed before the fire alarm sounded with LouLou Vos recording a seventh place finish in 10:21.01.
 
Tech freshman Abby Larson placed third in 50 free with a time of 23.46. Reka Gyorgy turned in a time of 55.90 to finish second in the 100 back for the Hokies. In the 200 breaststroke, Baillie Cameron was the top finisher for the Hokies placing fifth with a time of 2:22.34.
 
Vos got back in the pool for the 200 free where she finished second (1:51.11) while Purcell came out strong in the 100 fly, finishing second with a time of 55.90. 
 
Gyorgy turned in her second runner-up finish of the day as she finished with a 4:19.33 in the 400 IM. 
 
Tech rounded out the swimming events with a third place finish in the 400 free relay as Abigail Andrusin, Anna Landon, Larson and Purcell posted a time of 3:27.13.
 
On the boards, Ashlynn Peters took first on the 1-meter with an NCAA A score of 285.65.

DAY ONE
CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. –
The Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team leads Penn State 124-43 and No. 10 Ohio State 92-75 after the first day of competition at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The Hokies' women trail PSU 85-82 and OSU 108-59. 
 
HOKIES MEN
The Tech men got off to a strong start, finishing first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:19.57 off swims from Ian Ho, Thomas Hallock, David Herbert and Jake Lamparella
 
The Hokies followed up with the one, two finish in the 200 IM as Norbert Szabo turned in a time of 1:49.74 while Sam Tornqvist was just behind with a 1:50.17. 
 
In the 500 freestyle Lane Stone claimed the top place with 4:26.66 while freshman Brennen Doss claimed third in 4:36.13. Michael Craddock also scored for the Hokies in fourth (4:36.27). 
 
Szabo took another top-3 finish, this time placing second in the 100 breaststroke (55.94). Tornqvist was on top in the next event, finishing first in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.18 while Sean Workman was third in the event with 1:49.49. 
 
In the 100 freestyle, Ho and Lamparella claimed top-3 for the Hokies as Ho finished first in 44.60 and Lamparella in a 44.73 third place finish. The Hokies continued their top-3 finishes this time off freshman Blake Manoff's 1:49.35 first place time in the 200 fly. He was followed by Hassler Carroll with a third-place time of 1:50.57. 
 
Tech wrapped up the evening with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Lamparella, Szabo, Manoff and Ho turned in a time of 3:18.38.
 
On the boards, Ben Schiesl led the way with fourth place finish in the 1-meter with an NCAA A score of 343.30
 
HOKIES WOMEN
Tech's women took second in the 200 free relay to start the evening with Anna Landon, Abby Larson, Kayla Purcell and Abigail Andrusin recording a time of 1:33.57. 
 
Reka Gyorgy got the Hokies on the board in the 200 IM, placing second in 2:02.24. Baillie Cameron finished fourth for Tech in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:04.36 before Gyorgy turned in another top-3 finish, placing third in 2:00.62 in the 200 back. Andrusin claimed second in the 100 free (51.10).
 
The Tech women rounded out the evening with second and fourth place finishes in the 400 medley relay. Gyorgy, Cameron, Leah Rogers and Andrusin placed with a time of 3:47.30 while Emily Meilus, Erin Scott, Sydney Pesetti and Larson had a 3:49.91. 
 
Ashlynn Peters was the top finisher on the boards, placing first with a score of 310.15 in the 3-meter event. Regan Westwood came in fourth (263.85).
 
The competition will resume on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
