Matildas star Sam Kerr takes US girlfriend Kristie Mewis sightseeing around Sydney - one day after the loved-up couple played out a 1-1 draw on the pitch

They faced off on the soccer pitch in Newcastle on Tuesday night.

But by Wednesday, Samantha Kerr and her American soccer star girlfriend Kristie Mewis were the picture of love as they strolled hand-in-hand around Sydney.

In a sweet Instagram video of the couple, Matildas star Kerr, 28, at one point paused the sightseeing to lean in and kiss Mewis, 30.

Another image, posted to Kerr's Instagram Stories, showed Mewis gazing out the window of the couple's opulent Sydney hotel room.

The panoramic view gave the American athlete a perfect look at Sydney's iconic harbour. 

Just the night prior, the Matildas player and her Houston Dash star partner embraced at the end of the game between the Australia and the US in Newcastle.

They then quickly embraced, with Kristie unable to wipe the smile off her face after the pair parted. 

The tender moment came after game two of the International Friendly series between the Australia Matildas and the US Women's National Team at McDonald Jones Stadium. 

The lovebirds have been inseparable since they confirmed their romance in August. 

Kerr previously dated long-time girlfriend Nikki Stanton for almost eight years before quietly splitting early this year. 

It's understood Kerr told friends at the time that she and Stanton, who is also a high-profile American footballer in her own right, had 'fallen out of love'.

Soon after their split, talk that Kerr and Mewis had begun dating began to circulate in football gossip circles. 

Talk of a burgeoning fling reached fever pitch in Tokyo when the couple were photographed embracing in the moments following Australia's loss to the US in the bronze medal playoff match.

Soon after Kerr confirmed the rumours, posting a series of loved-up snaps with Mewis on Instagram.

On Saturday, the Matildas were defeated by the US team, with a 3-0 win. 

That match marked the first time the pair - who last met competitively at the Tokyo Olympics - played against each other since going 'Instagram official' back in August.

Kerr's team had a much better result on Tuesday with Matildas ending their calendar year with a 1-1 draw with the Americans.

A brilliant challenge from Newcastle local Clare Wheeler set up Kyah Simon to snatch a late equaliser.

In Australia's final game before January's Asian Cup, the US' Ashley Hatch scored in the fourth minute before Simon equalised with a deflection in the 88th.

Looking to add experience to his defence after losing 3-0 in Sydney on Saturday, Gustavsson turned to Lydia Williams over Teagan Micah in goal, while Steph Catley shifted to centre-back and Tameka Yallop dropped into left-back.

Teenager Jessika Nash was dropped and Kyra Cooney-Cross started in midfield, while Hayley Raso replaced Caitlin Foord.

But the US got off to another fast start despite a vociferous crowd of 20,495 at McDonald Jones Stadium - a record for the Matildas in Newcastle.

Gustavsson had stressed the importance of shutting down the US' transition game, but it proved his side's undoing in the fourth minute.

Yallop turned the ball over and Margaret Purce streamed forward before cutting the ball back for an untracked Hatch, who coolly slotted past Williams.

Lynn Williams fumbled an attempted header wide in the 11th minute while Hatch headed straight at Williams from close-range in the 16th.

Many of the Matildas' best chances broke down through poor crosses but Kyra Cooney-Cross was inches away from her first international goal in the 21st minute when she looped a long-range shot into the post.

US captain Lindsey Horan almost made it 2-0 in the 34th minute but for Courtney Nevin's last-ditch challenge.

Australia had a golden chance to level the scoring three minutes after half-time when Hayley Raso went on a blistering run then slipped the ball to Kerr, who made space under pressure but dragged her shot wide.

In the 58th minute, Lynn Williams tried her luck from range and forced Lydia Williams into a fantastic save.

As the game further opened up, Catley made a superb challenge to stop Morgan Weaver in her tracks in the 80th minute.

Eight minutes later Wheeler, a substitute in the 86th minute, bravely slid in on Ashley Sanchez and as she spun away pinched the ball before passing to Catley. She in turn found Kerr, who worked it to Simon.

The 30-year-old, who missed a sitter in Saturday's loss, saw her strike deflect off Becky Sauerbrunn before beating Casey Murphy in the US goal to salvage a draw much to the delight of the locals.
